Noteworthy Philadelphia

Volunteer Position: Music Program Associate (Instruction & Operations)

Noteworthy Philadelphia is seeking a Music Program Associate (Instruction & Operations)—an ideal role for an early-career music educator, vocal coach, or ensemble leader looking to develop hands-on experience in rehearsal leadership, vocal training, and performance preparation. This position offers professional development, mentorship, and leadership growth while playing a key role in shaping the ensemble’s musical direction.

This role is perfect for someone who enjoys structured instruction, leading rehearsals, and preparing vocalists for performances. You will work closely with singers to develop vocal technique, ensure rehearsal efficiency, and help refine musical execution for live and recorded performances.

About the Role

The Music Program Associate (Instruction & Operations) collaborates with the Executive Director and fellow Music Program Associate to co-lead rehearsals, provide vocal training, and keep the ensemble prepared for performances. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys teaching singers, reinforcing musical skills, and overseeing rehearsal efficiency.

This is a shared leadership role with the Music Program Associate (Advising & Musicianship), and together, both MPAs ensure the group is prepared for performances, recording projects, and music video production.

Responsibilities:

  • Co-lead rehearsals (Sundays, 11 AM–1 PM in South Philadelphia) to ensure an efficient and structured learning environment.
  • Develop and implement vocal training techniques, incorporating music theory, breath control, and vocal health into rehearsal sessions.
  • Lead warm-ups and vocal exercises to improve blend, diction, range, and overall vocal technique.
  • Manage rehearsal schedules and keep members on track with learning and refining music.
  • Oversee performance preparation, ensuring consistency in vocal execution, dynamics, and stage presence.
  • Coordinate logistics for performances, including sound checks, setlists, and rehearsal pacing.
  • Review audio and video drafts to ensure strong musical and production quality.
  • Work alongside leadership and creative team members, including the Executive Director, fellow Music Program Associate, Videographer, and Visual Performance Director, to ensure cohesive artistic execution.

Who You Are

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a strong background in music education, ensemble leadership, or vocal instruction.
  • Enjoys leading structured rehearsals and guiding singers through training and performance prep.
  • Is confident in music theory and vocal technique, and can teach these skills in a rehearsal setting.
  • Thrives in organizing and maintaining rehearsal flow, ensuring an efficient and productive environment.
  • Is local to the Greater Philadelphia area and available for Sunday rehearsals and performances.

Preferred Experience

  • Background in music direction, vocal coaching, or choral leadership.
  • Experience performing in a cappella, choral groups, or other live vocal settings.
  • Familiarity with ensemble rehearsal techniques and vocal pedagogy.
  • Passion for helping singers develop their skills and confidence.

Leadership & Growth

As part of the executive board, the Music Program Associate (Instruction & Operations) will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, contribute to high-level artistic decisions, and grow into a director-level position over time.

We are a young adult performing arts group that values creativity, leadership development, and collaboration. This role is ideal for someone looking to gain experience in artistic leadership while working alongside experienced professionals in performance, production, and creative direction.

Additional Details

  • Volunteer Position: This is an unpaid role, but you will hold a key leadership position in Noteworthy Philadelphia.
  • Group Membership Required: You must pass an audition and join as a singer in the group.
  • Flexible Attendance: If there is no need for direct rehearsal leadership in a given week, attendance is not required.

Trial Period

There will be a three-month trial period to ensure mutual fit and refine expectations for the role.
