Unconscious Bias Series

Join the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance for the Unconscious Bias Series, as we explore how Unconscious Bias impacts arts and cultural organizations and affects their ability to connect and engage new and existing audiences. This virtual series is designed to help arts professionals identify implicit biases and develop systems to prevent biases for deeper engagement with their communities. Through four, 90-minute workshops, participants will learn more about implicit biases in race, gender, class and accessibility. This series geared toward arts and culture professionals in marketing, program development, and leadership.

What is Unconscious Bias? Bias is a form of prejudice that is used to favor or other a characteristic, person or group. There are two types of biases, Conscious, which is explicit bias and Unconscious, which is implicit. Unconscious bias is derived from the subconscious in which social stereotypes constructed by society influence the individual’s decisions without their full awareness.

The series kicks off on January 25, 2021 with a panel of art community experts exploring racial bias. Join Donna Walker-Kuhne of the Walker Communications Group, Elizabeth Grimaldi, Executive Director at Fleisher Art Memorial and teaching artist Anthony Martinez-Briggs of The Wilma Theater as they give insights into their work and provide practical and tactical steps to addressing racial bias in your organization.

On February 1, 2021, the series continued with an examination of class bias with Laure Biron, Interim Executive Director of Broad Street Ministry. This is an intimate workshop with a facilitated exercise. Space is limited! [SOLD OUT]

On February 8, 2021, we will explore gender bias. Jorian Rivera-Ventidos, Prevention Manager at Galaei, Denise M. Brown, Executive Director at The Leeway Foundation, and John Jarboe, Founder and Artist at The Bearded Ladies Cabaret as they highlight  the limitations of gender bias and its impact in connecting with audiences.

Our series concludes on February 22, 2021 with a deeper look into ableism. Join Katie Samson, Director of Education at Art-Reach in a tactical workshop addressing ableism and how to be more accessible in marketing, communications and programming. This is an intimate workshop with a facilitated exercise. Space is limited. [SOLD OUT]

2020 Annual Meeting

As an Alliance, we want to take this moment to celebrate how important arts and culture is to our region and our community. Although gathering virtually this year, we will reflect on how our cultural community has adapted to meet the current moment as well as share the many ways in which the Cultural Alliance is working to serve and support you, our valued members, and the sector at-large.

We know that the experiences, changes and uncertainty of 2020 continue to challenge us all. But we are a resilient cultural community and our work, which has the power to heal, innovate, educate and bring people together (even when we cannot be together physically), is needed now more than ever before.

Together, as an Alliance, we will continue to be strong and resilient in all we do.

[Virtual] Making the Case for the Arts (Now More Than Ever)

Making the Case for the Arts (Now More Than Ever)

A compelling case for support – a clear and convincing rationale for why a donor should support you – is a messaging tool that every organization needs in its toolkit. Articulating your value is important in the best of times, but in anxious times, it’s critical. Your donors already believe in your mission. In a crisis, they want to understand how you – and their philanthropic dollars – will make the world a better place.

Join us for a one-hour session to gain insight into how your organization can craft effective messages right now. Led by Patricia LePera and Luise Moskowitz of SteegeThomson Communications, this webinar will help arts and culture organizations frame their impact to benefit their work now, and in the future.

We will explore questions such as: What makes the role of arts and culture essential in a time of crisis? How does your organization demonstrate its unique ability to meet the needs of your community members’ minds, bodies and spirits? How should you best tie your contributions to your emergency needs and ongoing sustainability? How can you best capture what you are doing now to support your fundraising efforts in the future?

This is a free event.

Creating a Diverse & Inclusive Workplace

How can you go beyond the vision for a diverse, equitable & inclusive workforce?

This workshop will explore best practices for recruiting, hiring and retaining diverse candidates as well as how to actively create an inclusive work environment. Attendees across all levels of leadership will be challenged to reflect on the role that unconscious bias plays and charged to create an action plan they can implement in the near future to increase inclusion within their organizations. After the event, organizers will continue these conversations by offering support and checking-in on action plan progress. Participants will leave the session with actionable practices, tips and supplemental resources to support the creation of strategies that will yield long-term results.

Tickets are $25 for members of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and $35 for non-members. Scholarships are available if the cost is a barrier to your attendance. Please email laureng@philaculture.org for more information.
