Volunteer Position: Music Program Associate (Advising & Musicianship)
Noteworthy Philadelphia is seeking a Music Program Associate (Advising & Musicianship)—an ideal role for a music educator, vocal coach, or experienced singer looking to develop leadership experience in vocal training, performance coaching, and artistic direction. This position offers hands-on mentorship and professional development while allowing you to help shape the musical vision of a growing vocal performance group.
This role is perfect for someone who enjoys coaching vocal technique, providing musical insight, and refining performances to enhance the group's overall musicianship. You will work closely with singers to strengthen their vocal abilities, offer performance feedback, and help bring out the best in every performer.
About the Role
The Music Program Associate (Advising & Musicianship) collaborates with the Executive Director and fellow Music Program Associate to co-lead rehearsals, provide vocal coaching, and refine the ensemble’s performance quality. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys mentoring vocalists, helping performers feel confident in their technique, and contributing to the artistic direction of the group.
This is a shared leadership role with the Music Program Associate (Instruction & Operations), and together, both MPAs ensure the group is prepared for performances, recording projects, and music video production.
Responsibilities:
- Co-lead rehearsals (Sundays, 11 AM–1 PM in South Philadelphia) and provide guidance on vocal technique and musicianship.
- Coach vocal technique and provide structured warm-ups to enhance singer control, resonance, and overall blend.
- Run numbers and provide performance feedback to help singers refine their execution for live performances and recordings.
- Offer real-time corrections and vocal adjustments during rehearsals and live performances.
- Provide artistic insight on song interpretation, musical phrasing, and emotional delivery.
- Assist in storyboarding and creative direction for music videos, ensuring visual storytelling aligns with the group’s artistic vision.
- Review audio and video drafts, offering feedback on vocal mix, balance, and final production.
- Collaborate on set lists and song selection, ensuring musical choices align with the group's strengths and artistic goals.
Who You Are
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has a strong background in vocal performance, vocal coaching, or music education.
- Enjoys working closely with singers to improve technique, tone, and stage presence.
- Can confidently lead rehearsals and provide expert-level guidance on musicianship and performance quality.
- Has an eye for creative direction, including storyboarding and shaping music video concepts.
- Is excited about contributing to the artistic and musical growth of a performance group.
- Is local to the Greater Philadelphia area and available for Sunday rehearsals and performances.
Preferred Experience
- Background in vocal coaching, music education, or ensemble directing.
- Experience performing in a cappella, choral groups, or other live vocal settings.
- Familiarity with staging, movement direction, or performance storytelling is a plus.
- Passion for guiding and mentoring singers in both live and recorded settings.
Leadership & Growth
As part of the Executive Board, the Music Program Associate (Advising & Musicianship) will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, contribute to artistic decisions, and grow into a director-level position over time.
We are a young adult performing arts group that values creativity, leadership development, and collaboration. This role is ideal for someone looking to gain experience in artistic leadership while working alongside experienced professionals in performance, production, and creative direction.
