Exhibitions Assistant
Reports To: Curator

The Exhibitions Assistant is responsible for supporting the Curator in overseeing the successful planning, coordination, and execution of Asian Arts Initiative’s (AAI) Exhibitions program, with support for its general programming and events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ability to assist with Exhibition Installations.
  • Ability to lift and move Exhibition materials, up to 50 pounds.
  • Produce exhibition-related materials including captions and handouts.
  • Support gallery sitting and public hours.
  • Oversight and maintenance of exhibition equipment.
  • Vinyl and lettering production for AAI building as requested.
  • Coordinate logistical support for public programs events and house manage when necessary.
  • Maintain internal and external project timelines, and ensure all milestones are met, working with AAI’s staff on key deliverables.
  • Welcome exhibition attendees, offering interpretation, guidance, tours, or answering questions as needed.
  • Assist with internal tracking of Programs metrics and audience data.
  • Coordinate artist contracts and payment.
  • Provide input, advice and research as requested related to AAI’s general goals and programs.
  • Assist with communications with artists, project partners, and consultants, in collaboration with other AAI staff.
  • Support Programs Marketing requests.
  • Willingness to work outside of main responsibilities and serve as an organizational ambassador as advised by supervisor.

Hours and Compensation

This is a full-time staff position at 40 hours/week, Tuesday - Saturday, with occasional evening and Sunday hours required. The gallery is open from 2 - 6 pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and periodically for receptions. 

The salary is $44,000, with an annual cost of living review. This position is eligible for AAI's fully employer-funded medical and dental group plan, hybrid work model, and unlimited PTO policy.

Organizational Overview

Asian Arts Initiative is a multi-disciplinary and community-based arts center in Philadelphia that advances racial equity and understanding, activating artists, youth, and their communities through creative practice and dialogue grounded in the diverse Asian American experience. Through exhibitions, performances, and community projects, we provide an inclusive gathering place for conversation and exchange of ideas. Our community-based arts initiatives seek out and cultivate innovative models for artists to engage with local communities, with a particular emphasis on working in partnership with our immediate neighborhood.

Our primary programs include:

1) Artist residencies, commissions, and presenting of performances and exhibitions for artists to develop professionally and to create socially relevant artwork reflecting community experiences;

2) Year-round out-of-school-time programming for middle and high school youth, offering creative development and a safe place;

3) Participatory curatorial practices and various community development initiatives in our immediate neighborhood of Chinatown North/Callowhill.
