Commonwealth Youthchoirs

Founded in 2001, Commonwealth Youthchoirs, Inc. (CY) is a non-profit, community-based, non-denominational 501(c)(3) arts organization headquartered in the Northwest neighborhoods of Philadelphia. CY operates three distinct programs that nurture a love of singing, music education, and a desire for excellence in nearly 500 primary and secondary students in the Greater Philadelphia region. Our programs include the Keystone State Boychoir (founded 2001), the Pennsylvania Girlchoir (founded 2004), and Find Your Instrument! (2008). CY offers outstanding choral education and life-changing performance opportunities to its young people here at home and abroad.

Commonwealth Youthchoirs seeks a dynamic leader who will take the organization and its established musical and administrative staff into its third decade. 

Executive Duties include, but are not limited to:

Organizational Leadership

  • Serve as the main liaison to CY Board of Directors, participating in Board committees and Board meetings; working with Board and staff on strategic planning and progress towards strategic goals; serving as public spokesperson for CY to promote the organization and engage the community at large.
  • Work closely with Co-Artistic Directors to oversee CY programming, developing short and long term plans; participating in program evaluation and improvement
  • Provide practical oversight and direction for all areas of operation; develop systems to ensure the most efficient operations; direct essential timelines for regular day to day operations and for special projects
  • Oversee administrative operations including human resources and personnel, office management, facility relations, and box office

Development (Fundraising)

  • Executive Director is the “face” of CY, developing new funding opportunities and sustaining relationships with current funders
  • Develop and maintain relationships within the philanthropic, arts/music, education, government, and private sectors
  • Lead development planning, fundraising activities, directing growth in foundation, corporate, and individual contributions
  • Overseeing development and fundraising operations including annual development goals, donor relations, and grant applications
  • Guide the strategy for cultivating, securing, and growing individual donors and corporate sponsors

Financial Management

  • Work closely with the CY Treasurer and Executive Committee to establish clear financial goals, ensure sound fiscal planning, including financial reporting, cash management, and annual audit management
  • Manage bookkeeping (with outsourced accountant), payroll, IRS and state tax filings/compliance, banking, business-entity reporting,  insurance, event cash handling, and all other tasks related to organizational financial health, legal compliance, and compliance with CY Fiscal Policies.
  • Monitor the budget, ensuring that expenditures are in line with available resources, executing proper financial controls, preparing accurate financial analysis that communicates results and trends of CY business
  • Negotiate, manage, and/or execute contracts on behalf of CY with other organizations, venues, musicians, etc.

Marketing and Community Outreach

  • Oversees marketing, branding, and communication strategies, collaborating with staff to refine communication with the goal of increasing exposure, and ensuring a strong identity
  • Oversees and manages external communications through social media, MailChimp, press releases, etc

Position Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in nonprofit or small business management, preferably in an arts and culture organization with a budget below $5M.
  • Evidence of strong strategic fiscal management, oversight, and budgeting skills with experience in developing, managing, and growing an annual operating budget
  • Experience with all phases of non-profit development
  • Experience with community-based children’s, youth, or other community programs, sustaining and building relationships with families, community, and donors
  • Excellent managerial skills with the ability to establish proper processes and procedures as the organization grows, and who is detail-oriented and excels in prioritizing work and managing people, projects and resources towards outcomes

This is a full-time, in-person 12-month position. 

Salary: Approximately $100,000 along with a comprehensive benefits package. 

Anticipated start date: July 2023.
