About Us

The Association for Public Art (aPA), founded in 1872 as the nation’s first private, non-profit public art organization, seeks a hands-on and detail-oriented assistant for a position to support our projects and public programs that connect people with public art. The aPA is committed to contributing to a representative public art collection in Philadelphia, and to advancing accessibility, diversity, equity, and belonging in our work.

The aPA’s award-winning and innovative programs carry out our mission to commission and acquire, preserve and protect, interpret and promote public art in Philadelphia. The aPA is dedicated to creating a Museum Without Walls that informs, engages, and inspires diverse audiences, while supporting the art of our time and advancing the importance of public art to the city’s places and spaces. Contemporary commissions, exhibitions and acquisitions include works by Jody Pinto, Rafael Ferrer, Martin Puryear, Pepón Osorio, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Roxy Paine, Cai Guo-Qiang, Jennifer Steinkamp, Maren Hassinger, Xenobia Bailey, and Rachel Hsu.

Position

The Program Coordinator will assist with coordinating, organizing, and implementing aPA’s public programs and community engagement activities through in-person and virtual opportunities. The Program Coordinator will report to the Assistant Curator/Project Manager and will work collaboratively to support aPA curatorial, marketing & communications, conservation, and development staff.

We are a small, dedicated, and dynamic team seeking an attentive public facing, and collaborative individual with excellent organizational skills who will represent aPA with enthusiasm and confidence. This is a one-year renewable (up to two years) full-time salaried position (currently operating hybrid remote and in office) that will also require some evening and weekend hours.

Responsibilities

• Assist aPA curatorial, marketing & communications, conservation, and development staff to support public art programming and engagement activities
• Coordinate and implement programming logistics, including, but not limited to those for an annual juried artist open call, a large public artwork installation as part of the 250th celebrations, as well as planned exhibitions, tours, and public programs such as talks, workshops, special events, and community engagement activities—both virtually and/or in person • Oversee recruiting, training, scheduling, and supervising program-related interns, volunteers, and contract workers
• Manage event registrations, venue bookings, and online event hosting services
• Research, cultivate and maintain strategic relationships with a wide range of program partners, stakeholders, vendors and consultants, including artists, cultural and community organizations, and city government employees as directed
• Develop, implement, and incorporate evaluation strategies into public programs

• Bachelor’s degree in visual art or related field, with minimum two years related or comparable non-profit work experience
• Appreciation and passion for contemporary art, artists, and public art projects
• Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills

• Strong project coordination and problem-solving skills; must effectively manage multiple projects and prioritize deadlines simultaneously
• Detail-oriented and organized, with ability to manage budgets and contracts
• Familiarity with Philadelphia and ability to navigate the city with ease; Driver’s license a plus

• Experience with InDesign, Photoshop, Jotform, Eventbrite, and NeonOne or comparable CRM and Macs a plus

• An enthusiastic, confident team player with excellent interpersonal skills
• Ability to provide diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and practices to the work of aPA

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary commensurate with experience $50,000 - $53,000
• Excellent paid benefits package, including personal health, dental, and disability insurance
