Arch Street Meeting House Preservation Trust

The Site Caretaker for Arch Street Meeting House (ASMH) lives onsite and provides building and staff support to Arch Street Meeting House Preservation Trust (ASMHPT). This is dual tenant and contractor position. The position reports to the Museum and Education Manager of ASMHPT. This position receives subsidized rent, free utilities (gas, electric, water, internet), and free parking in exchange for assisting with visitors’ services, rentals and maintenance for 14 hours a week. Additional assistance for rentals outside of normal contracted times is paid.

  • Subsidized rent ($25.00/month).
  • Free utilities including gas, electric, water and internet.
  • Free parking onsite.

Responsibilities In Exchange for Subsidized Rent

The Site Caretaker works collaboratively with ASMHPT staff to ensure successful day-to-day operations at Arch Street Meeting House. The Site Caretaker must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays. The Site Caretaker responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

Visitor Services – Front Desk/Tours

  • Working weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), evenings, and holidays when ASMH is open to the public (March-December).
  • Working Sunday worship services when ASMH is closed to the public (January-February).
  • Collaborating with volunteers, answering visitor questions, and assisting with tours.
  • Greeting visitors, taking visitor donations, and collecting visitor data for internal use.
  • Attending one weekly meeting to coordinate responsibilities for upcoming week;
  • Cleaning visitor spaces, removing trash and vacuuming.

Maintenance – Building and Grounds

  • Assisting with access to the Arch Street Meeting House grounds, on weekends or afterhours per availability;
    • Communicating with staff about potential maintenance, security, or preservation concerns and assisting contractors for access to the building, including after-hours access;
    • Responding to maintenance issues as they arise including emergency water shut off, adjusting the heating and cooling of the building, removal of trash and clearing walkways during inclement weather. 
    • Closing gates throughout the week and opening and closing gates on weekends.

Paid Responsibilities

Rentals – Rental Support (1099 compensation at $20/hr)

  • Assisting the Museum and Education Manager with up to 20 hours of rentals or events a month;
    • Assisting with cleaning, set up/tear down, and turnover of rental spaces;
    • Assisting during rentals;
    • Tending to the useability of the rental spaces, such as managing garbage/recycling, sanitizing rental spaces, setting up furniture, etc. 

Qualifications

The Site Caretaker must:

  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent professional experience;
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational, time management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills;
  • Be available to work weekends and evenings;
  • Have familiarity with Microsoft Office;
  • Be fluent in English and be able to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, including working with the public, interpersonal communication, e-mail, text messaging, etc. 
  • Be able to lift 50 lbs.

Our ideal candidate may also have:

  • A valid driver’s license;
  • Knowledge of Quaker faith, practice, and history;
  • Experience in building or grounds maintenance;
  • Previous caretaker experience in the Philadelphia/Old City area
