Position Purpose:

​Passionate and creative Long-Term Substitute Visual Arts Teacher for the Middle School. ​Creating a dynamic and inspiring classroom environment that encourages students to explore and develop their creative potential. Nurturing critical and creative thinking within the curriculum while enhancing each student’s artistic abilities. Fostering collaboration through projects such as the Middle School Art Show, promoting teamwork, and cultivating a sense of community within the classroom. The successful candidate will work in close partnership with Middle School faculty and students to ensure the school’s mission and values are reflected in daily teaching practices and interactions.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Utilizes a studio-based approach to teach a diverse range of media, including drawing, painting, ceramics, design, printmaking, woodworking, fiber art, mixed media 3D, and digital art, to students in grades 5 through 8.
  • Collaborates with colleagues and administrators on the enhancement of the arts program. 
  • Actively evaluates new tools and methods for classroom use. 
  • Monitors inventory and sources art supplies as needed. 
  • Oversees student ePortfolio as the main assessment tool in the Art studio. 
  • Regularly displays student work, collaborates with the Art Faculty on the yearly all-school Art Show, and seeks opportunities for community engagement. 
  • Creates an inclusive classroom community and personally demonstrates cultural competency, with a focus on integrating diverse voices into the curriculum. 
  • Encourages students to explore learning opportunities. 
  • Maintains expertise in subject matter through professional development. 
  • Partners regularly with parents/ guardians, teachers, advisors, and administrators in order to support students’ academic, social-emotional, and behavioral growth. 
  • Attends weekly grade-level team meetings, faculty meetings, department and program meetings, open houses, Crawford Gallery openings, and other school events as required.
  • Advises approximately ten students, providing academic and emotional support to students.
  • Communicates regularly with parents and guardians of advisees. 
  • Teaches advisory curriculum related to identity, diversity, and inclusion. 
  • Establishes a safe and productive classroom environment, using effective classroom management techniques to ensure effective learning. 
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, including lunch/recess supervision and providing needed coverage for colleagues.

 

Qualifications:

  • At a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts. 
  • Proven ability as an artist and demonstrated ability in various media. 
  • Knowledge of studio-based art classroom methods, applicable safety procedures in the Art studio, and the use and maintenance of kiln and art classroom tools. 
  • Comfort with a team-based work structure; works well collaboratively and demonstrates flexibility. 
  • Enthusiasm for and comfort using technology in and out of the classroom. 
  • Ability to foster creativity and serve as an advocate for the Arts. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of cultural competency skills and enthusiasm for issues of diversity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism. 
  • Outstanding planning and problem-solving skills. 
  • A clear interest in, knowledge of, and ability to work with Middle School students. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues. 
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Work in an environment dealing with a wide variety of deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods.
  • Be able to lift up to 20 lbs occasionally.
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office environment. 
  • Able to move around a classroom and other school environments.

This job is paid on a daily basis, with the compensation being $200 per day. We typically pay on a full- or half-day basis.
