Haverford College invites applications for our part-time (20 hours per week), non-exempt, benefits-eligible Conservation Technician and Exhibit Preparator opportunity.  

About the Position
The Conservation Technician and Exhibit Preparator works under the guidance of the Library Conservator to implement the Libraries’ ambitious exhibit program, construct enclosures for rare materials and general stacks items, and repair books. This position works closely with other staff on conservation and preservation work, with curators from around campus on exhibit projects, and with student assistants in the Conservation department, and is expected to adhere to the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice of the American Institute for the Conservation of Artistic and Historic Works (AIC).

Primary Responsibilities

  • Play an active role with exhibition preparation and installation, including creation of supports, mounts, and frames for materials as well as creation, design, and layout of exhibit labels and signage
  • Install art and signage across campus as requested by College staff and faculty, which may involve use of ladders; create and lay out signage for art
  • Perform a range of treatments, including, but not limited to, recasing, pamphlet binding, protective enclosure construction, and paper repair as needed to carry out these operations, and matting and framing of artwork
  • Track materials in process using various administrative systems
  • Train and supervise student assistants
  • Working with the Conservator, help to oversee stocking and preparation of bindery supplies and materials, and maintenance of the bindery equipment and tools
  • Work with other members of the library staff on projects related to conservation operations, as assigned
  • Work on disaster recovery efforts with the Conservator and other library personnel, as needed
  • Adhere to the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice of the American Institute for the Conservation of Artistic and Historic Works (AIC)

Line of Report: The Conservation Technician and Exhibit Preparator reports to the Library Conservator.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Professional Competencies

  • A high degree of manual dexterity, creating work with attention to detail and neatness
  • Demonstrated experience with exhibition preparation, matting and framing of artwork, or repairing books
  • Familiarity with Adobe Suite, particularly InDesign and Photoshop
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to display initiative, creativity, flexibility, dependability
  • Ability to exercise good judgment
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Capacity to foster and work in a highly collaborative environment
  • Familiarity and aptitude for a variety of technologies and a willingness and capacity to learn new ones

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or some college experience
