Associate Conductor: Young Musicians Debut Orchestra (YMDO)

The Associate Conductor is a member of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra Music Institute’s artistic faculty and staff and is responsible for assisting with the artistic operation and development of the Young Musicians Debut Orchestra, a program division of the PYOMI. As such, the YMDO Associate Conductor works alongside the YMDO Director and Conductor on all artistic matters according to the guidelines established by the PYOMI, including repertoire selection, auditions, rehearsals, and selection of players and guest artists. The YMDO Associate Conductor will work in close collaboration with the PYOMI Director of Education and will serve as an artistic liaison with community groups. The YMDO Associate Conductor is expected to be able to cover all scheduled rehearsals, concerts, and events of the YMDO as requested and is expected to have a thorough knowledge of all YMDO season repertoire. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Serve as assistant conductor to the Director, cover conduct YMDO rehearsals and concerts when asked, and have a thorough knowledge of YMDO season repertoire.  
2. Collaborate with the YMDO Director in planning the concert season. 
3. Collaborate with the Director in developing artistic plans for YMDO. 
4. Stay abreast of repertoire appropriate for youth instrumentalists. 
5. Serve as requested on audition committees for student auditions and competitions at PYOMI. 
6. With the Director, select coaches and guest artists, as needed. 
7. Exercise leadership in developing the total artistic quality of the orchestra. 
8. Serve as an artistic liaison with schools, community music educators, and private studio teachers, and develop and maintain collaborative working relationships. 
9. Play a visible and active role in the community and help develop the overall public image of the orchestra in the community. 
10. Assist in the general promotion of the orchestra. 
11. Stay abreast of artistic activities in the orchestra field and recommend to the Director new activities that may advance the orchestra’s objectives. 

START DATE:  September 1, 2025 
REPORTS TO: YMDO Director & Conductor 
COMPENSATION: Part-time, seasonal, per service remuneration based on experience and classified as an independent contractor. One service is equal to one rehearsal, one concert, or one audition day.
