Frederick W. Oster Fine Violins is seeking a violinist/fiddler for the position of Assistant Manager. Candidates need strong administrative skills and aptitude, enjoy working in a small business environment, be comfortable engaging with customers and staff in a positive and supportive fashion, and have a sense of humor.
The shop, founded in 1974, is an eclectic Center City retail business specializing in the sale, appraisal, and repair of fine violins. The Assistant Manager will work with us to manage general office duties and assist with retail shop activities. We are looking for a person interested in participating in a collaborative approach to outreach, problem solving and developing new ideas.
Daily tasks and special responsibilities include:
∙ greeting clients, coordinating and assisting with their needs
∙ providing retail assistance to customers purchasing strings, accessories, cases & instruments
∙ managing telephone calls & weekly appointments in the calendar
∙ coordinating appointments and repair projects with our workshop
∙ preparing written correspondence, appraisals and other typed/written materials
∙ reviewing and answering emails
∙ preparing paperwork for instrument trials and sales and appraisals)
∙ monitoring supplies & accessories inventory, and placing orders for items needed
∙ working in Microsoft Access database to catalogue inventory
∙ coordinating with our part time staffer to make sure that everyday tasks are managed
∙ participating in the creative development and production of outreach materials
∙ developing Constant Contact campaigns, and creating Instagram & social media posts
occasionally demonstrating violins/bows to customers who need that assistance
∙ giving tonal & playability feedback to clients & Fred
∙ Overseeing the daily care, seasonal maintenance, and organization of instruments
Computer proficiency is a necessity. A working knowledge of specific computer programs including WordPerfect, Microsoft Access and Paint Shop Pro is helpful. There is no accounting work associated with this job. Applicants should be organized and have good verbal and written communication skills. A person who can work with our clients and staff enthusiastically, contributing ideas and carrying out the responsibilities of administering office duties is encouraged to apply. College level education or equivalent is preferred. Oh, we also have two cats in the shop.
