Librarian/Cataloguer Intern (Unpaid)

10 weeks, 10 hours per week (flexible)

Position Description: The Museum for Art in Wood in Philadelphia, PA, is looking for a part-time Librarian/Cataloguer Intern to catalogue new acquisitions of books. This will include inputting associated data into the PastPerfect collections management database as well as organizing, labeling, and shelving (also re-shelving as-needed) material in alphabetical and numerical order. If time allows, the Intern will use an existing inventory of books to identify duplicates within the collection and document condition issues.

The intern will perform physical tasks, such as lifting and moving library material up to 30 pounds and will also be expected to use a computer for extended periods of time to catalogue using Excel and the PastPerfect collections management database.

This position will work mostly independently and will be supervised by the Registrar and Manager of Collections.

The Librarian/Cataloguer Intern will work on-site at the Museum for Art in Wood, 141 N. 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities of the Librarian/Cataloguer Intern include:

• Cataloguing new acquisitions and the backlog of unprocessed books using the Museum’s catalogue system for publications

• Inputting associated data into the PastPerfect collections management database

• Physically labeling and shelving material in alphabetical and numerical order according to library systems

• Reshelving books accessed by researchers

• Using an existing inventory of books to identify duplicates within the collection and document condition issues

Working Environment: Expected working conditions include:

• Moving library materials weighing up to 30 pounds

• Extended periods of computer-based work

• Working in an environment with varying light and noise levels

• Working in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust is possible

Qualifications: Qualifications of a successful candidate include:

• Enrollment or recent graduation from a Library and Information Science graduate program, or Archival Studies program, or equivalent job experience

• Experience working in archives and library collections

• Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented

• Ability to work independently and in a small team

• Working knowledge of Excel and PastPerfect collections management database (preferred)
