Visitor Services Assistant

Glen Foerd

Organization Description: Glen Foerd is an 18-acre public park, museum, and historic site located along the Delaware River in Philadelphia. Glen Foerd stewards an eclectic riverfront estate for the enjoyment and educational benefit of the community. Drawing from the estate’s architecture, art, material culture, and history—as well as its gardens and waterways—Glen Foerd provides inclusive experiences that spark curiosity and support Philadelphia’s natural and cultural ecosystems.

Position Description: Glen Foerd is looking for Visitor Services Assistants to steward the museum during public visitation hours and during private, catered events.

Visitor Services Assistants’ duties are two-fold: welcoming the general public for self-guided tours, and supervising vendors and partners when Glen Foerd is rented for private events. The majority of these events are weddings, taking place on weekends. Wedding guests are not only event attendees, but potential return visitors, and Visitor Services Assistants act as hospitable representatives for Glen Foerd while stewarding the site.

Visitor Services Assistants must be reliable, independent, detail-oriented, and confident, as they are often the only Glen Foerd staff represented at private events. They should be prepared to handle problems that may arise, such as excessive noise levels and general misconduct. The Visitor Services Assistant is responsible for seeing that Glen Foerd policies are followed, ensuring that the museum and collection are treated respectfully, and making sure that the site is clean and secure at the end of the night.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Represent the museum in an engaging and professional way
  • Answer questions and attend to guest needs to ensure a positive experience while visiting Glen Foerd
  • Circulate among visitors to protect property and ensure cooperation from partners and renters
  • Field phone calls during private events and complete post-event reports
  • Follow and enforce all COVID-19 related guidelines as determined by the organization
  • Solicit feedback from museum visitors and implement surveys when requested
  • Other tasks as assigned

The Visitor Services Assistant should be proactive and flexible with customer service, problem solving, and interpersonal skills. They must have the ability to work well with a variety of individuals and audiences. Ability to climb stairs regularly during their shift and be comfortable standing for a number of hours is necessary. General knowledge or interest in art, history, architecture, or preservation is a big plus. Reliable transportation that is not dependent on public transit is recommended for this position.

Employment Type: Seasonal, part-time, non-exempt. Interested candidates must have the ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Shifts generally are 8 hours, but may be longer depending on the event. There is a morning/afternoon shift and an evening shift. The hours are weekend heavy--  Events occur on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from March through November, though occasionally there are weekday evening events, and opportunities for work through the winter may also arise.

Compensation: $15.00/hour
