POSITION SUMMARY
The Crew Chief oversees all art handling services while effectively managing client relationships, crew members, and their activities related to the handling, packing/unpacking, installation/deinstallation, and transport of artwork and fine furniture.
As the Crew Chief you will work closely with your crew each day to complete outlined daily job descriptions. You will be expected to be the point of contact for each job you are assigned and be responsible for working with and reporting to the office Dispatcher, office team, and on-site clientele.
Our clients are primarily in the Philadelphia area, however some jobs may require overnight stays and/or several hours of driving. Crews are always notified beforehand and are asked to opt in for these.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- The handling and transportation of fine art, decorative art, and fine furniture.
- Use and instruction of appropriate packing, handling, crating, and safety techniques as established.
- Loading and unloading of trucks to ensure safe transit.
- Conduct condition checks & reports for artwork and furniture (being able to identify and document conditions with appropriate language).
- Oversight and completion of paperwork and BOLs.
- Working directly with clients on-site.
- Management of on-site crews and activities.
- Clear and concise communication regarding any changes in on-site activity with clients, crews, and Dispatcher.
Required Skills & Experience
- A minimum of 2 years experience in art handling.
- A minimum of 2 years management or in a similar role.
- Proven ability to communicate information and instructions between team members. and clients alike.
- Strong attention to detail, discretion, and follow-through.
- Familiarity with Paperwork, BOLs, Inventory, Daily Logs, etc.
- Basic math skills to perform calculations while measuring on job sites.
- Physical stamina to handle long hours of performing strenuous work during the day.
- The ability to lift and move heavy objects up to 75lbs.
- Mechanical skills to use any necessary machinery and equipment for moving artwork.
- Ability to perform heavy labor, such as moving materials, tools, art, etc.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Effective time management skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
Ideal Candidate:
- Proactive and organized team player who is dependable, consistent, and punctual.
- Working knowledge and interest in fine art, decorative art, design, or similar.
- Working knowledge of industry-standard packing, crating, and installation techniques and materials.
- CDL / Box Truck driving experience is a plus.
Working Conditions:
- Working environment varies and includes locations such as offices, gallery spaces, private residences, and the outdoors.
- Workers may occasionally be in environments that are cold/hot, or even noisy if working at a location where other contractors are present.
- Essential physical requirements: climbing, standing, stooping, lifting, squatting, etc.
- Work week is M-F with varying start/end times but most frequently 8-5pm. Weekend, holiday, and night work will occasionally become available and are offered to crew (as optional).
- This is a full-time position approximately 32 hours per week.
- Required 3-month probationary period including training.
- Compensation is based on experience.
