Monument Lab

The Director of Communications will work to strengthen all organizational (internal and external) communications for Monument Lab. By leading, planning, and managing the organization’s comprehensive communication efforts, the Director of Communications will deepen and sustain organizational growth, strategy, and vision for Monument Lab’s work at the intersection of art and justice. The Director of Communications will oversee and manage Monument Lab’s Communications Department, to include marketing, social media, external media, and design. In addition, this position will support and collaborate closely with the Advancement team.

The Director of Communications is a part of the organization’s Director’s Group. In this capacity, this position is responsible for maintaining an understanding of the organization’s financial model, fundraising priorities, and financial position. participating in crisis management and mitigation efforts; and supporting the organization’s strategic planning initiatives; and providing the Director’s Group and staff at-large regular updates and insights regarding the day-to-day, short-term, and long-term activities and goals of the Communications department. Reporting to the Director, this position manages a team of employees and contractors.

This position is open to candidates with a variety of training paths and professional expertise. The ideal candidate will have a diversified background in communications, but also broad intellectual interests crossing fields and disciplines; expertise in nonprofit practices; and wide-ranging knowledge in the arts and humanities.

Organization Leadership

  • Oversee and manage Monument Lab’s Communications Department, to include marketing, social media, external media, and design. 
  • Develop and implement organizational communications plans, to include vision, strategy, goals, timeline, workflow, and toolkits. 
  • Manage the development of organizational projects and program materials to include press-releases, newsletters, presentations, one-sheets, fundraising collateral, and other tools to ensure appropriate messaging and brand strategy are effectively executed. Assist in the creation of digital, video, audio, and print content. 
  • Oversee organizational-wide design work.
  • Coordinate with the Advancement team on public messaging.
  • Organize and lead weekly communications team meetings.
  • Participate in speaking engagements and host special events.  Promotes events of all kinds.
  • Co-lead efforts on crisis communications planning with support from Director and Directors Group.
  • Manage and lead a team of employees and contractors.

Communications

  • Develop communications plans for all Monument Lab initiatives, including public events, fundraising campaigns, and merchandise launches.
  • Lead efforts on organizational brand stewardship.
  • Manage Monument Lab’s website, ensuring that all project pages are up to date. Project manage large-scale website initiatives and outsource development and design services as needed. 
  • Manages metrics activities to include frequent analysis and reporting. Track engagement across all platforms and make data-driven decisions. 
  • Utilize organization metrics, list segmentation, and advertising platforms to target audiences for specific projects and programming, as well as quarterly and annual reports
  • Liaise and provide creative direction with project-specific photographers and videographers; ensure project-specific documentation is processed through the communications department in alignment with organization best-practices. 

Projects & Design

  • Develop and implement a communications plan for all Monument Lab projects. 
  • Support the project management department in the utilization of public language templates, promotional toolkits, and media production as needed. 
  • Support the project management department in the assessment of all project design needs to include identifying when design needs to be outsourced and assisting in identifying vendors. 
  • Track all design needs across the organization and work in close coordination with design staff to identify priorities, move design projects through the pipeline, and outsource design as needed. Oversee the production of publications as required.
  • Qualifications
  • Five to seven years of communications and marketing experience, and at least three years of supervisory experience. Bachelor's and master's degree preferred.
  • Experience working with arts and culture organizations, progressive political campaigns, advocacy NGOs, and nonprofits preferred.

  • The ability to work independently and manage multiple short-term and long-term projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills that cultivate creativity, collaboration,
  • and transparency. An active listener who is empathetic, respectful, and confident.
  • Experience using Airtable and FileCamp is preferred.
