Reports To: Executive Director
Supervises: Development Operations Manager, Communications and Marketing Manager
The Director of Development works closely with and supports the leadership team at Asian Arts Initiative (AAI) to bring resources to the organization in support of our programming. With a focus on institutional giving the Director of Development also leads special events, individual giving, annual fund, corporate support, and acts as a liaison to the Board of Directors. As a part of this transition the Director of Development will work with AAI’s team to set a strategy for sustainable measurable growth that reflects our values.
Under the directorship of a dynamic Executive Director, we have a collaborative and participatory work environment. In support of an externally focused, visionary director, the Director of Development will develop strategy and work to expand leadership’s reach. As a key member of the leadership team the Director of Development will inform the direction of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Fundraising:
● Develop and execute AAI's annual fundraising plan in alignment with our values, our strategic marketing plan, and annual fundraising goals through the solicitation of individual gifts, special events, and corporate and foundation support
● Develop annual departmental and fundraising goals that work to inform long-term financial forecasting
● Set grant administration strategy and procedures; support Development Operations Manager in implementation
● Set individual and major gifts donor strategy and procedures; supports Development Operations Manager in implementation
Administration:
● Recruit, train, oversee, support, develop, and guide qualified development staff
● Identify, hire, and oversee all independent contractors and/or volunteers related to
building capacity in fundraising
● Monitor, assess, and report regularly on the progress of the development program
● Ensure accurate and up to date documentation and record keeping of all fundraising operations
Leadership:
● Guide and support the activities of the Executive Director in all matters related to major gifts, institutional funders, and individual donor relationships.
● In tandem with the leadership team, develop strategy and implementation plan for a future capital campaign.
● Act as an ambassador and spokesperson for the organization where appropriate. This role will develop and maintain relationships with various stakeholders and partners and serve an external facing role.
Communications/Marketing:
● In tandem with the Executive Director, provide strategic leadership in implementation of marketing and communications plans.
● Oversee the development of relevant marketing materials.
● Manage Strategic Marketing and Media relations
● Supervise and manage the Marketing and Communications Manager; monitor
progress of their work plan and (communications) departmental goals.
General:
- In tandem with the Executive Director, provide strategic planning, guidance and support on the continued enhancement of AAI’s programmatic, educational and community development activities consistent with its mission.
- Assist in oversight of organizational policies and procedures that ensure the efficient and professional operation of the organization. Collaborate with the finance department to maximize earned and raised revenue.
- Manage and track organizational and departmental budgets where relevant.
- Positive attitude and willing participation in a small team dynamic. Willingness to work outside of main responsibilities and serve as an organizational ambassador as advised by supervisor.
- Collaborate with director-level management in long-term and strategic planning processes, implementation and monitoring across the organization.
First Year Success Criteria
● FY22 fundraising goal is met
● Develop strategy, timeline, and plan for capital campaign
● Develop and institute evaluation process
● Growth and professional development of Development and Communications staff
Qualifications
● Proven project management experience; ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities and tasks with an excellent attention to detail.
● Personal flexibility and the ability to work with diverse personalities and evolving organizational needs.
● Strong written and verbal communication skills.
● Commitment to organizational values of social justice and
equity.
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience working in a small organizational context.
● Experience with donor database/CRM preferred.
● Experience with non-profit finance and budgeting.
Hours and Compensation
This is a full-time permanent exempt salary position at approximately 40 hours/week. The salary for this position is set at $80,000 plus a full benefits package. Evening and weekend hours may be required.
Organizational Overview
Asian Arts Initiative is a multi-disciplinary and community-based arts center in Philadelphia that advances racial equity and understanding, activating artists, youth, and their communities through creative practice and dialogue grounded in the diverse Asian American experience. Through exhibitions, performances, and community projects, we provide an inclusive gathering place for conversation and exchange of ideas. Our community-based arts initiatives seek out and cultivate innovative models for artists to engage with local communities, with a particular emphasis on working in partnership with our immediate neighborhood. Our primary programs include: 1) Artist residencies, commissions, and presenting of performances and exhibitions for artists to develop professionally and to create socially relevant artwork reflecting community experiences; 2) Year-round out-of-school-time programming for middle school youth, offering creative development and a safe place; 3) Participatory curatorial practices and various community development initiatives in our immediate neighborhood of Chinatown North/Callowhill.
