Responsible for the operation, maintenance and safety of the studios, labs and material resources used for teaching and research in the Department of Art, Architecture and Design. This is an undergraduate Department with 40,000 sq. ft. of instructional and research spaces located on Lehigh University's Mountaintop Campus. Responsible for patrolling assigned campus areas on foot, in patrol car or on bicycle to control traffic, prevent crime, disturbance of peace and arrest violators. Provides the University community with a safe and secure environment in which to live, work and learn. Ensures the security of all Campus buildings and residential housing.

1. Studio and lab maintenance
*Maintain operational readiness of all department-operated studios, labs, shops, instructional and research facilities; including their physical space, equipment and tools
*Perform walk-throughs inspections of all Department spaces at the beginning and end of each day
*Address operational and maintenance issues by notifying staff in the University's auxiliary units as needed
*Submit, manage, review and reconcile all work orders and repair tickets
*At the end of each semester, oversee the preparation of instructional spaces and resources so that they are ready for use in the subsequent semester

2. Materials and consumables handling
*Manage the organization, storage and distribution of consumable materials used by students and faculty, as needed for instruction and research
*Track purchase orders and if necessary, pickup materials from vendors located within a 100-mile radius of the University
* Oversee on-site delivery and receiving of larger shipments from vendors that arrive at the Department's loading dock; physically move items to the appropriate instructional and research spaces
* Manage the removal and disposal of materials left over from courses that cannot be repurposed; develop and oversee a protocol for sustainable recycling of cardboard, wood, metal, and plastic consumables

3. Safety, compliance and cleanliness
*Establish, maintain, monitor and enforce protocols for safe use and cleanliness for all departmental facilities, equipment and materials
*Work with faculty and students to ensure safe and proper use of personal protective equipment, studio and lab equipment as well as safe handling, storage and disposal of hazardous chemicals *Ensure that studios and labs are compliant with OSHA and other national, state and University safety guidelines.
* Establish and oversee safety protocols in the case of an emergency

4. Instructional and faculty research technical support
*Provide a set number of hours each week of on-site technical support to faculty and students using equipment and tools in Department-run studios and labs
*By prior arrangement and agreement, on-site support may include times during the after-class window of 4-9 pm, as needed for instruction and research
* Provide on-site technical support to faculty working on individual faculty research projects that requires the use of tools, equipment and space

5. Special projects and project management
*Provide support, guidance and oversight for special projects within the Department that make use of facilities and resources, ranging from temporary exhibitions of student artwork and artistic projects of artists-in-residence, to potential building and renovation projects for the Department, on an as needed basis
* Oversee and install temporary exhibitions of student work in Department spaces; serve as a liaison for student exhibitions held at the Lehigh University Art Galleries
* Provide staff-level representation at meetings with the University's Facilities Department and outside vendors for construction and renovation projects in the Department's spaces
* Provide project and technical support to Visiting Artists, Artists-in-Residence, Lecturers and workshops hosted by the Department, including the Horger Artist in Residence, an intensive residency that the Department hosts every three years
* Provide project assistance to faculty teaching courses that have a design-build or service learning component outside the classroom

Special Considerations

The duties of the position do not allow for a remote work option; the employee in this position will be required to work on campus where they can be fully accessible to the Lehigh community

This position works 10 months per year, having off the months of June and July

Will work a variable shift; hours must fall within the range of 7 am-9 pm. to enable after-hours monitoring of studios and labs when use is heaviest among students

This position works with minors

This position is responsible for driving university-owned vehicles as a routine function, therefore a valid Driver's License and a good driving record is required

Will nearly continuously need to hear, talk, stand, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, climb or balance, use hands to reach, touch, handle or feel, push, pull and lift up to 25 pounds

May occasionally work in areas subject to fumes or airborne particles, work near moving mechanical parts or with work hazards such as machinery, heights, toxic or caustic chemicals, etc.

Qualifications

High school diploma or the equivalent combination of education and experience; Associates Degree preferred

One to three years related work experience

Ideal candidates will have training and experience in the management, operation, and safe use of resources and technologies in three or more of the following areas: woodworking, metal fabrication, intaglio and silkscreen printmaking, ceramics, pigment-based media and digital fabrication including laser cutting, CNC tools and additive technologies.

Knowledge and experience using CAD software and/or Adobe Creative Suite is also highly desirable

Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and a high degree of initiative for bringing tasks to completion

Works well with in a collaborative team environment

Solid computer skills with experience using word processing and spreadsheet software

Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position
