Mapping and Geographic Information Systems for Nonprofits: Cases and How Tos

Join Jeremy Heffner of Avencia as he moderates a panel of those using mapping and GIS (geographic information systems) to present data and actions.

What you'll learn by attending:

  • How can you present your message geographically?
    • Matthew Fisher of Night Kitchen Interactive will share the upcoming PhilaPlace.org resource which is working to "illuminate the history and culture of Philadelphia's unique neighborhoods" through an interactive map of personal stories connected to specific locations.
  • How can you engage the public and crowd-source the collection of data?
    • Katie Edwards of Clean Air Council will share the tools used to create IdleFreePhilly.org, a site for the public to report idling vehicles around the city and collectively work to reduce air pollution.
  • How can freely available Census data help you accomplish your mission?
    • Anne Jeffers of the US Census Bureau will share how to access the census data, what sort of information is available, and how you can incorporate it into your work.
  • How can GIS inform policy and directly engage the public in the political process?
    • Tamara Manik-Perlman of Avencia will discuss RedistrictingTheNation.com/Philadelphia a joint project with Committee of 70 to study the gerrymandering of legislative districts and present it to the public in an easy to use website.

Video Production "Bootcamp"

MiND Boot Camp: You Can Do It!
A One-Day Video Production Workshop

Join MiND for a unique one-day workshop to learn video production basics from our expert instructors. You will learn about concept development, video production, editing, and just about everything you need to know to bring your ideas to TV.

Spend the morning with our instructors and learn about concept development and how to efficiently pre-produce a program idea. Make sure you come with an idea for a 5 minute program that we can discuss as a group!

We will take a short break and then jump right into shooting basics. Learn the primary functions of a video camera and how to properly frame a shot.

Spend the afternoon in smaller groups to get a crash course in editing and participate in a field shoot. One of your afternoon sessions will require you to actually pre-produce one of your program ideas, so make sure you come prepared!
