JOB TITLE: Museum Collections Intern
SUPERVISOR: Development and Programs Manager; will work closely with the Collections Committee
STATUS: 15 hours/week; unpaid
Wyck, an historic house, garden and National Historic Landmark, is located in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. The Wyck Association's mission is to tell the story of Wyck, the quietly elegant home, historic gardens, farm buildings, and collection of objects and papers that reflect the everyday life of one Philadelphia family over three hundred years. Wyck’s programs reflect the family’s passion for education, Quaker simplicity, and natural history and horticulture. Wyck is committed to enriching and strengthening community life.
The Museum Collections Intern helps make Wyck's collections accessible to the general public, researchers, and Wyck's staff, by assisting with the day-to-day management of Wyck’s objects database, collections storage and files, interior environmental monitoring, as well as assisting with interpretive elements, such as exhibits.
RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Help plan and coordinate interpretive activities, such as identifying and moving objects for changing exhibitions and programs and tour development.
- Attend Collections Committee Meetings (if schedule allows).
- Create digital images of Wyck’s Collections as needed from slides, old photos and new photography and loading onto Wyck’s server.
- Implement Wyck’s collections policies.
- Monitor Wyck’s interior environment (temperature, relative humidity and dewpoint) through use of dataloggers and web-based software. Adjust environmental conditions as needed with seasonal use and regulation of fans and dehumidifiers.
- Keep and maintain Wyck’s PastPerfect database.
- Assist with cleaning the museum and storage spaces as needed, re-housing collections as needed.
- Respond to research inquiries as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Recently completed or currently working toward degree in a field such as museum studies, material culture, art history, or public history
- Ability to work independently but also as part of a team
- Attention to detail
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Strong written and verbal communications skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and willingness to learn PastPerfect
- Knowledge of PastPerfect is a plus.
- Ability to work some weekdays and occasional evenings and weekends.
