The Clay Studio

Overview:

The Clay Studio is a nonprofit arts organization with internationally renowned artist residency programs, classes and events, exhibitions, community engagement programs, a shop, and more. The Clay Studio serves as a place where established and emerging artists come to shape their careers; it is a vital resource for arts education at local schools and community organizations, and a destination to explore the vast world of clay.

We seek a Community Organizer who is enthusiastic and engaged in arts based community building projects. This position will manage logistics for two grant funded community engagement projects based in the greater South Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia where The Clay Studio is relocating to in 2019/20.  One project is generated by The Clay Studio Education Department, and one by Exhibitions Program.

This position is a part-time grant funded position for one year. The Community Organizer will average 12-15 hours per week, with increases around planned events. The position will be jointly supervised by the Director of Education and the Curator of Artistic Programs.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities will consist of, but are not limited to, the following duties:

  • Schedule, implement, and support the planning of the two community engagement projects and work closely with the community partners and sites;
  • Identify, initiate, and deepen relationships with various community stakeholders;
  • Attend community meetings on behalf of The Clay Studio, provide information about the projects and advocate for participation;

Logistics coordinator for meetings and events;

  • Including communication with participants from the following groups: TCS staff, advisory groups, teaching artists, neighborhood organizations, and neighbor partners.
  • Marketing
  • Scheduling
  • Arranging for Hospitality and Childcare

Other responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the community engagement/education staff on processing artwork and other ceramics specific logistics;
  • Distribute information to the community and broader public through multiple channels;
  • Create mechanisms for evaluation of the community engagement projects.
     

Qualifications:

This position requires 1 to 2 years of experience in Community Engagement programming and/or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (art education, community arts, studio art, museum studies, community development.) The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:
 

  • Experience and success working in partnership with local residents and community organizations;
  • Effective communication, both in person and in writing (fluency in Spanish is preferred);
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license; Pennsylvania State Child Abuse Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Clearance, and a Pennsylvania Criminal Background Clearance are required to be obtained before employment begins;
  • Experience working in an environment with multiple stakeholders and interests, managing multiple projects simultaneously with demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, and work collaboratively;
  • Willingness to work select weekends and evenings throughout the year and to adjust hours to accommodate the needs of the projects. Work hours for planning will be during regular business hours, events and meetings will sometimes be during the evenings and weekends;
  • Experience in group facilitation and making public presentations;
  • Experience living or working in the greater Kensington area is strongly preferred;
  • Some knowledge or experience with ceramics is preferred.
