Young Professionals Census Forum

Please join us and some of the City's premier leaders to learn more about the census and to discuss the barriers young people might face attempting to participate.

According to a recent Pew Study, only about one third of people under 30 definitely plan to participate in the 2010 census.

This is the case, despite the fact the census will be used by employers to decide whether to locate jobs in Philadelphia, by businesses to decide whether to open new stores and restaurants in our neighborhoods, and by government to decide where to locate new housing and to improve infrastructure.

Please join us and some of the City’s premier leaders to learn more about the census and to discuss the barriers young people might face attempting to participate.

How Nonprofits Can Use Video to Convey Their Messages

Video can communicate a message in ways that print cannot. In this course we will address when, how and why nonprofits should employ video. You'll learn when it's the right choice (and when not), how to find the right company with which to work, and how to create an RFP for a video. Bring your questions and your insights!

There are still openings remaining at this time.

Net Tuesday: Social Media & Crisis Response

March's Net Tuesday will be on "crisis response" (whether caused by nature or humans) and social media.

Of course, this is top of mind today because of the disaster in Haiti — and because of the amazing creativity and energy of volunteers using social technology to respond. CrisisCamps are springing up all over, bringing people together to create and advance technological tools to help out.

One example of this technology is the Extraordinaries "crowdsourcing" the identification of individuals in pictures from Haiti, helping families get information about their loved ones. Another is Ushahidi's Haiti incident mapping, allowing people on the ground to create real-time reports that help guide the delivery of humanitarian and medical services. Many other types of technologies have been developed in response to crises of various kinds.

We're currently looking for panelists for this event: If you, or someone you know fits any of the following, please let us know:

  • has been involved in using social technology in crisis response situations
  • has attended or plans to attend a CrisisCamp, and would like to report on it
  • has knowledge, ideas or perspective on the critically important role of social media that needs to be heard
