The Evolution of Privacy and the Social Web

June 3, 2010 - 6:00am

The right to privacy is a solidly held belief, yet as the Internet and the social web have evolved, many of us have begun to barter privacyfor convenience, without fully exploring the trade offs.

In 2008, there were loud protests about the Facebook News Feed, but today the news stream is an integral part of our social media experience, from Twitter to Google Buzz. Our privacy limits are being pushed by social media, for better or worse.

How does the evolving privacy landscape affect the work that we do as nonprofits? Now is the time to have the privacy conversation and wrap our heads around what this means for us asnonprofits, so that we can best support and protect our clients, volunteers, and donors. Join us for an online workshop where we'll discuss the new role privacy has in society and how online privacyin social media impacts your nonprofit's work.

The workshop will open with a plenary on Publicy And The Erosion Of Privacy from Stowe Boyd, known for his speaking and writing on the social revolution on the web.

Stowe will share insights on this shifting social paradigm thatwe are currently in. The more we live online, the more we find ourselves in a climate that is predominantly open. And this has come with a subtle and subversive shift in the basis of self-identity. How will nonprofits reconcile their needs for strategic control of information and current management approaches with a profound societal shift toward 'publicy'?
