Arts & Culture in the News 

  • “The time is right for Philadelphia’s cultural community, our elected officials and other stakeholders to come together to discuss the future of arts and culture,” says Cultural Alliance President Patricia Wilson Aden.   • The City of Philadelphia awarded $1.5 million through the 2024 Illuminate the Arts Grant, led by Creative Philadelphia, to local individual artists, nonprofit art organizations, and creative enterprises. View the list of awardees.
  • The Arts + Business Council programming, including Business on Board, found a new home within The Nonprofit Center at La Salle University. Learn more. 
  • The Philadelphia Cultural Fund has launched the 2025 Art & Culture Grant for returning organizations with an average budget of $1.5M or less. Learn more.
  • The Shapiro administration has launched a new grant search tool to streamline access to Pennsylvania state funding opportunities. Learn more. 

 

Updates from the Cultural Alliance

We’re pleased to share that the Cultural Alliance has been invited to testify at an upcoming Philadelphia City Council hearing to examine the city’s preparations for the multitude of events coming in 2026, including celebrations for America’s 250th birthday, the FIFA World Cup, and Major League Baseball’s All-Star game. Councilmember Isaiah Thomas, Committee Chairman, introduced Resolution No. 240701 to hold the hearing on November 18 and we need to hear from you. Join us next Tuesday, November 19 Cultural Dynamics: Co-Creating a Vision for Philadelphia, a groundbreaking convening featuring Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD, Chair, National Endowment for the Arts, 20+ additional voices from across the sector, and artistic and musical performances. 

Cultural Dynamics will unite artists, nonprofit leaders, funders, and elected officials to explore strategies that integrate arts and culture into transformative civic decision-making. We invite the public to join us for a livestream of this important conversation and a series of community-based meetings that will follow. Full schedule is below. Arts & Culture by the Numbers

Thank you to the 50 cultural organizations who participated in the Cultural Alliance’s Social Impact Database supported by AARP. The full report will be released in December and will give Philadelphia’s government officials a tangible tool to better serve the city’s population. The tool will also raise greater awareness of social impact programming and services by arts and cultural organizations. Learn more.

    We Are the Seeds of CultureTrust is committed to amplifying Indigenous voices through the arts. The organization was founded by a team of Indigenous women who are dedicated to honoring Native arts and cultures as a means to understanding Indigenous peoples, the history of (what is now called) the United States, and who we all are as American people today. We Are the Seeds produces cultural events that feature Indigenous fine art, music, dance, fashion, literary, and culinary art. Additionally, Seeds hosts interactive art programs that focus on educating and empowering the youth.

  • New Member Spotlight: Welcome, Metropolitan Ballet Company!

    Founded in 1996, Metropolitan Ballet Academy and Company is a school of classical ballet with an affiliated nonprofit, pre-professional performing company. Located in Jenkintown and serving the greater Philadelphia area, Metropolitan Ballet’s training program teaches over 400 students ages 3-adult and nurtures those students who wish to pursue a career in dance. Its community outreach programs bring high quality dance performances to more than 10,000 people annually, and uses movement to teach math and literacy skills in Philadelphia public school classrooms through its innovative Kinetic Literacy Program.   • Member Spotlight

    It goes without saying that this is a challenging time for those of dedicated to the live performing arts. At People’s Light, a professional Regional Theatre located in Malvern, PA, their hearts are missing that frisson of live connection. However, they continue to be driven by their commitment to make theatre in a larger sense.  In their mission, People’s Light identifies itself as a cultural and civic center with theatre at its core. Positioned in this way, theatre is the stuff we can create, but also a way of generating space for ongoing civic engagement and dialogue with and for our communities. So while they can’t safely produce plays in this moment, their charge to use artistry and creativity for ongoing civic and community engagement remains. In this article, they offer ways that they have continued to make theatre at People’s Light since the pandemic has taken hold.
