Statement on the City of Philadelphia's FY2022 Budget
Although there is some uncertainty around the allocation of the budget, this is a win! And we know that this win only happened because our community’s voice was heard by City Council – loud and clear – in these past few weeks. Arts and culture was front and center in City Council’s intense budget negotiations because of the advocacy of so many. From organizations of all sizes and disciplines to grassroots advocates to our incredible artists, Councilmembers were left with a clear message: The creative economy matters to this city, and it must be supported.
We want to especially thank Councilmembers Derek Green, Katherine Gilmore Richardson, Isaiah Thomas, Mark Squilla, Cindy Bass, Cherelle Parker, and David Oh for their willingness to engage our sector with authenticity and openness – and for their vocal support of arts and culture when it mattered.
Advocacy for arts and culture is an essential aspect of our work and the Cultural Alliance will continue to move it forward, working with the Mayor’s Office, OACCE and City Council to stabilize and secure the future of Philadelphia’s creative economy.
