Philadelphia, February 7th, 2012—The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance today announced the appointment of Michael Norris as its new Vice President of External Relations, directing the Alliance’s policy, community engagement and development initiatives. Norris will start March 19th.
Norris comes to the Cultural Alliance from Art-Reach, where he served as Executive Director, expanding cultural access for people of all ages and circumstances. Last year Art-Reach enabled 15,000 Philadelphia-area residents with disabilities and economic disadvantages to enjoy a cultural experience.
“We’re thrilled to welcome someone with Michael’s passion for culture and commitment to the people of this region,” said Tom Kaiden, the Alliance’s president. “He’s the right person at the right time to help the Cultural Alliance ensure that culture is driving growth in every community throughout Greater Philadelphia.”
Prior to leading Art-Reach, Norris spent nine years at the Arden Theatre Company, serving first as Development Director, and then as Director of External Relations, overseeing the company’s fundraising, marketing, public relations and community activities.
A native of Chester County, PA, Norris graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia with a B.A. in journalism. He holds a certificate in fundraising from the University of Pennsylvania, and participated in the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders at Stanford University Business School. He was selected in 2011 by Leadership Philadelphia as one of Philadelphia’s Creative Connectors.
About the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance
The Cultural Alliance’s mission is to lead, strengthen and give voice to a diverse cultural sector that is making Philadelphia a world-class region to live, work and play. Working with more than 400 nonprofit arts and cultural institutions located primarily in the five counties of southeastern Pennsylvania, the Alliance believes that Greater Philadelphia grows stronger and more vibrant by growing its arts and culture. The Alliance’s work promotes that mission through initiatives that leverage arts and culture to inspire individuals and build community and civic engagement. These efforts include connecting cultural resources to community needs; providing direct services for nonprofit cultural organizations; leading cultural research, advocacy and policy work; and producing direct marketing programs for cultural consumers.
The Cultural Alliance’s work reflects these key principles: Arts and culture is an engine for economic growth. It has the power to elevate lives. It has the power to educate. We own it, as residents of the Greater Philadelphia region, because it comes from us. It helps individuals come together and grow as a community.
