Position Announcement: Executive Director


Alice Paul Institute, Inc. (API) is a forward-thinking nonprofit organization based in Mt. Laurel, NJ whose mission is to honor the legacy of suffragist Alice Stokes Paul (1885-1977) and her work for gender equality through education and leadership development initiatives. Housed at Alice Paul's birthplace and family home (Paulsdale), which is a National Historic Landmark (c. 1805) on 6 acres of protected land in a suburban neighborhood, API focuses on achieving full gender equality for all through:

  • Educating the public about Alice Paul’s work and complex history, and by preserving Paulsdale as a historic site and active center for feminist programs.
  • Providing leadership development programs and opportunities – both in person and online – for individuals identifying as female, particularly girls ages 8-18.
  • Continuing the work to realize full gender equality under the law, in part by advocating for the Equal Rights Amendment, Alice Paul’s signature piece of legislation.

Position Overview

API seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to expand the reach and impact of the organization and build on increasing momentum. The Executive Director (ED) will take API to the next level by developing/strengthening strategic partnerships; expanding place-based and online programming; and accelerating our advocacy efforts.  

Reporting to a board of directors, the ED will lead operations with a staff of 9 (6 full-time, 3 part-time) to drive expansion and execution of API’s mission. This full-time role includes responsibility for program and event development and administration, fundraising and financial management, staff and board development, site management, and development and implementation of strategic initiatives.

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in progressive nonprofit leadership, preferably within an advocacy, history or cultural organization with a budget under $5 million.
  • Experience in driving demonstrable organizational growth with proven ability to provide strong and innovative leadership, vision, and strategic direction.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience in advocacy for gender equality, diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Track record of success in raising funds, awareness, and support through various techniques (including major donor cultivation, event management, planned giving, etc.)
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with ability to cultivate productive relationships with diverse stakeholders including donors, organizations, elected officials and others; ideally has connections in the NY/NJ/PA corridor.
  • Evidence of success in developing, managing, and growing an annual operating budget with strong business and financial management skills.
  • Proficiency with standard office software and ability to drive digital transformation.
  • Superior oral and written communications skills, including public speaking.
  • Excellent planning, time management, and decision-making skills as well as ability to lead and embrace change.
  • Willingness to work a variable schedule, including weekends and evenings, as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation with ability to climb stairs and carry 25 lbs.
