About Philadelphia Young Playwrights Philadelphia Young Playwrights (PYP) was established by Adele Magner in 1987. Since then, the curriculum has been continually updated, refined, and expanded, but the goals of the program remain the same: PYP provides tools for students to improve their writing-based literacy skills through playwriting—while also advancing creativity, confidence, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills. Now, as we approach our 40th anniversary, PYP teaches in 80+ classrooms around the Philadelphia region and runs a model of our playwriting curriculum in after school and summer programs through our Neighborhood Initiative. In 2024, over 700 individual monologues, individual plays, small group plays, and full class plays were created by our students. Annually we also produce 10+ plays and readings written by our student playwrights, in addition to offering professional mentoring and writing and revision workshops to help our student playwrights deepen their craft. |
