Production & Company Manager

BalletX, Philadelphia’s premier contemporary ballet, seeks a motivated, detail-oriented, and forward-thinking Production & Company Manager to support its artistic and general operations.

Founded in 2005 and led by Artistic & Executive Director Christine Cox, the company has commissioned nearly 80 choreographers from around the world to produce 140 world premieres that are “fresh, inclusive, and connect to what people want” (Philadelphia Citizen). With a versatile and diverse ensemble of 16 dancers, hailed as “among America’s best” by The New York Times, BalletX pushes the boundaries of classical ballet to tell today’s stories with passion, creativity, and exuberance. As a vibrant global incubator for artistic talent, the company makes ballet accessible and inviting, captivating audiences at prestigious venues including The Kennedy Center, Vail Dance Festival, The Joyce Theater, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. BalletX seeks a motivated, highly organized, forward-thinking, and team-oriented individual with a passion for the performing arts and building community through dance. Reporting to the Associate Artistic Director and the Director of Production, this position requires a person who can multi-task, be flexible, and work on both short and long-term timelines simultaneously. The ideal team member will have the ability and eagerness to do frequent hands-on work, and to represent the company both at home and on tour with accountability and positivity. This position will be part of a dynamic work environment with a highly engaged team focused on excellence.

Position Overview:

The Production & Company Manager manages production, technical, and logistical aspects of BalletX’s performances and events to support organizational success. This role acts as a liaison for guest artists, manages costume inventory, maintains archival production data, secures music rights, assists with facility and storage maintenance, and supports studio rehearsals. 

Role and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Production Management: Support the Director of Production in planning, coordinating, and overseeing all production and logistics aspects of BalletX performances, tours, and artistic events. Collaborate with artistic staff to achieve creative vision and production goals.
  • Company Manager and Guest Artist Liaison: Coordinate travel, accommodation, per diem, hospitality, and other logistics for touring engagements and guest artists. Serve as the main point of contact for guest artists, ensuring their needs are met and providing a welcoming and supportive environment. Prepare and distribute Company Tour and Guest Artist Itineraries.
  • Stage Management: Serve as Assistant Stage Manager for BalletX’s performances, tours, and artistic events, as well as backup to the calling stage manager. Serve as the stage manager and main production point of contact for BalletX’s annual fundraiser, The Premier Party, and for Dance eXchange Final Performances.
  • Costume Management: Manage and maintain BalletX’s costume inventory, including storage, repairs, and organization. Oversee costume fittings and coordinate with costume designers on logistics. Prepare and pack costumes for tour engagements. Launder and clean costumes as necessary.
  • Music Rights Management: Secure music rights for performances and digital media. Research, identify, and negotiate with publishing and distribution entities.
  • Facility and Storage Management: Lead the maintenance and upkeep of BalletX’s studio facilities. Manage the regular cleaning and maintenance of the studio dance floor. Coordinate and facilitate janitorial work to ensure a clean and safe environment. Manage BalletX’s storage facilities, ensuring proper organization and maintenance of costumes, props, scenery, and lighting and sound equipment.
  • Archival Management: Ensure all production data is accurately maintained and updated in Dropbox and PatronManager, including event and repertory archives, technical specifications, and other relevant documentation.
  • Rehearsal Support: Provide logistical and technical support for rehearsals as needed.

This position is full-time with a salary range of $55,000-$70,000 (commensurate with experience) and accompanying benefits. BalletX is an equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theater (or related field) is preferred, but not required
  • Previous experience working in stage management is required
  • Experience working in nonprofits is a plus 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace
  • Experience with databases, such as Salesforce, is a plus
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to juggle multiple priorities and complete responsibilities in a fast-paced environment 
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships 
  • Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Team player who is ready to hustle and pitch in wherever necessary 
  • Positive, professional, and proactive attitude with strong creative problem solving skills 
  • Night and weekend hours will be required for performances and special events
  • Out of town travel (including air travel) is required for tour performances
