Community Engagement Manager
The Community Engagement Manager (CEM) oversees the day-to-day operations of The Clay Studio's (TCS) Claymobile program and studio. They work closely with the Deputy Director to balance timelines, schedules, and budgets. The Claymobile program works with schools, community organizations, and social service agencies around the Philadelphia region to provide under-resourced communities with high-quality arts programming. The program offers an innovative, hands-on approach to learning that strengthens and enhances existing cultural programming, supplements educational curricula, and catalyzes community engagement.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Below are the duties and responsibilities of the Community Engagement Manager, reflecting the tasks associated with their key competencies:
CUSTOMER FOCUS & EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
- Ensures attention to detail, uses tact, and prioritizes building relationships
- Maintains a friendly, positive demeanor when interacting with colleagues, students, and the public
- Prioritizes building rapport and a shared understanding of the program with site contacts to ensure the students have a meaningful experience
CLAYMOBILE RESIDENCIES & WORKSHOPS
- Determine Claymobile community partnerships in collaboration with the Deputy Director (the Claymobile program partners with nearly 100 organizations annually for workshops and residencies)
- Communicate with partner sites to plan and schedule residencies and workshops.
- Maintain a transparent and organized process for managing a Claymobile partnership (paperwork, scheduling, etc.)
- Collect all grant-related materials and reports for the Development Department.
- Keep up-to-date itineraries for each Claymobile partner site.
ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Support the teaching artists in curriculum development for residencies and workshops.
- Oversee and install the annual Claymobile Creations exhibition (typically held in January).
- Maintain and create new content - lesson plans and curriculums - for the Art Education resource page on The Clay Studio's website.
- Work in collaboration with outside evaluators to define and implement outcome-based evaluation models.
- Write and distribute quarterly Claymobile e-newsletter.
- Collaborate on program planning with various partner sites, including artist groups, schools, community centers, advocacy groups, and appropriate Board Committees.
- Work with the Deputy Director to plan and implement other community events and festivals, such as Hands-On Clay, and Clay Fest.
- Oversees the onsite After-School program and manages the After-School Coordinator.
- Support grant writing application efforts with program and partnership ideas.
- Manage special grant projects related to the Community Engagement program
- Other duties assigned as needed
SUPERVISION OF TEACHING ARTISTS & ASSISTANTS
- Responsible for hiring and orientation of new Claymobile teaching artists and assistants.
- Manage the work of Claymobile teaching artists and assistants. This includes six staff teaching artists (5 full-time, one part-time) and additional contract teaching artists and assistants.
- Create and maintain a schedule for all Claymobile teaching artists and assistants.
- Maintain active and up-to-date clearances for all teaching artists and assistants.
- Work with the Deputy Director and outside evaluators to evaluate all Claymobile teaching artists and assistants
- Provide quarterly professional development opportunities for Claymobile teaching artists and assistants.
- Complete bi-weekly payroll for all contract teaching artists and assistants
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- 2-5 years of experience in arts administration, art education, community engagement, program management, and ceramics.
- At least one year of experience managing a team of three or more.
- Previous experience with teaching art, especially ceramics.
- Technology savvy and hyper-organized.
- Ability and interest in working with people of all ages, from pre-K through older adults.
- Certifications, experience, and coursework in trauma-informed teaching practices, social justice initiatives, and anti-racist teaching practices are a plus.
- Being bilingual, especially in Spanish and English, is a plus.
- Must have a valid Driver's License.
- The position requires lifting 50 lbs. and climbing stairs regularly.
WORK SCHEDULE:
The CEM is expected to work 40 hours weekly, including a one-hour lunch break daily. These hours generally fall between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The CEM must schedule 8 hours daily with the Claymobile schedule in mind; therefore, the exact time of entering and leaving work is flexible. Occasional evening and weekend work is required for special events and programs, including Second Thursday as scheduled.
