"Find Your Instrument" Music Director

Position Summary
The position of FYI Music Director at Philadelphia Boys and Girls Choirs (PBGC) and Commonwealth Youth Choir (CYC) is designed to support to the choir’s mission of expanding musical opportunities, creating partnerships with educators and schools, and fostering broader engagement with choral music.

The FYI Music Director is a teaching artist and choral musician working within the FYI (“Find Your Instrument”) program to lead push-in programming in various school sites. The FYI Music Director reports to the Manager of Music Education and leads after-school and in-school general music and choir programming.

Key Responsibilities
• Conduct rehearsals and performances for participating after-school and in-school general music and choral ensembles
• Collaborate with administrators and educators in school sites to coordinate weekly programming
• Participate in recruitment to maintain enrollment in classes and ensemble(s)
• Develop relationships with students and participating partners to ensure high levels of engagement and retention
• Work with Artistic team to utilize PBGC/CYC repertoire and prepare students for upcoming performances
• Coordinate with Manager of Music Education, school partners, and Artistic team to organize performances, recitals, and celebrations of participating schools

Essential Qualifications
• Child-centered perspective and delivery of excellent instruction to children
• Fluency or proficiency in Spanish preferred
• Proficiency in fundamentals of choral pedagogy, including solfege, aural-oral learning of songs with simple movement, audiation, posture and healthy singing, and basic vocal technique
• Familiarity with principles of child development and best practices in teaching and learning
• Excellent communication and relational skills
• Ability to plan and execute rehearsals and lesson plans with a high level of expertise, care, and tenacity
• Ability to travel between sites
• Punctual, professional and reliable
• Bachelor’s degree in Music or Music Education required. Experience accepted in lieu of degree
• Ability to complete state child abuse, background check, and FBI clearances as required by the State of Pennsylvania

Hours
• Tuesdays 3:15-4:15; possible additional hours from 12-3
• Potential for additional hours as the program expands
• Program runs for the duration of the school year (September through June)

Compensation
This position pays $55/hr for rehearsals. Other rates apply for meetings, chaperoning, and performance conducting.

This is a part-time non-exempt position with occasional evening or weekend hours.
