Co-Teaching Artist, Doing Good Program

Project 440 is a youth-driven student first community-based organization. We use music as the catalyst to help young people grow as individuals and members of their community. Our free afterschool programs for Philadelphia high school students include Doing Good, Instruments for Success, and the Youth Advocacy Council.

Students develop an entrepreneurial mindset, gain leadership and service skills, learn about the college admissions process and career opportunities, and attain a toolkit of 21st century skills that serve them throughout their lives, whatever path they choose.

ABOUT DOING GOOD

Doing Good is an intensive twelve-week, 25-session afterschool program that teaches leadership and service and fosters an entrepreneurial mindset. Students develop communication and collaboration skills and learn budgeting, event planning, project management and more. In the second six weeks of the program, participants work in groups to apply these skills to create and implement a final service-learning project.

The projects are music themed and community based. Each group receives funding of up to $500 to implement their project. After all of the projects have been completed, each group gives a project presentation at the Doing Good graduation attended by family, friends, and community members. Each student receives a stipend of up to $825 at the conclusion of the program.

OUR YOUNG PEOPLE

Musicians and non-musicians alike often tell us, “I wish Project 440 had existed when I was in school.” We open our doors to all Philadelphia high school students regardless of their musical skill level, interests, or prior experience. This approach undergirds our goal to remove barriers to participation in the arts.

Our students’ musical interests, knowledge, and experiences are varied and diverse. Some perform in a school or other youth ensemble, some in their own groups, others are composers and songwriters, and some students primarily have other artistic interests and experiences but value music as an outlet to nurture their well-being, creative pursuits and curiosity.
