TECHNICAL DIRECTOR for The Play That Goes Wrong

Under the supervision of the Production Manager, The Technical Director (TD) is responsible for
managing scenic aspects of the production including construction, load-in and strike at Plays
and Players Theatre. Some jobs may be bid out to shops off-site and some may be built in-house
at 1812’s shop in South Philadelphia. The TD will supervise overhire carpenters and crew and be
responsible for creating a safe work environment for all personnel involved.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

● Work closely with the Production Manager and Scenic Designer to advance and
implement designs and meet deadlines while ensuring the design is achievable with the
assigned budget.
● Attend design and production meetings, technical rehearsals, and dress rehearsals as
needed.
● Coordinate technical elements with other production staff.
● Track expenses and submit receipts and budget spreadsheets to the Production
Manager.
● Manage construction, load-in, and strike of all scenic elements, including transportation
to and from the venue.
● Coordinate hiring, scheduling and supervising of overhire labor with the Production
Manager.
● Read rehearsal and show reports and respond to relevant details or notes.
● Maintain the scenic elements through the run of each production as needed.
● Work to ensure a safe working environment and comply with any relevant safety codes
(including but not limited to fire code, building regulations, and employer safety
policies.)

EXPERIENCE

Proficient with Vectorworks or AutoCAD. Strong carpentry skills. Experience working with
standard shop equipment. Familiarity with proper safety protocols for theater and shop spaces.
Excellent organizational and communication skills. Experience hiring and supervising crews. BA
or BFA degree or relevant experience in the field.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

The Technical Director requires physical demands including: ability to lift heavy objects, climb
ladders and stairs, work at height. A valid driver's license and ability to drive box trucks. (CDL
not required.)
