Executive Director

Overview: The Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra (GPYO) seeks a creative, and energetic nonprofit manager to guide this sixty-year-old program through its next phase of growth. The ideal candidate must have a passion for music education and will have a strong track record in fundraising and organizational development. This is a wonderful opportunity for a strategic and collaborative leader gifted at building relationships. 

Starting Date: Fall 2022 

Reports to: GPYO Board of Directors 

Salary: $60,000 starting base salary, commensurate with experience and expertise.

Full-time position, including Monday evening rehearsals (September - early June), and occasional weekend events. Flex-time, hybrid work; professional development opportunities.

Responsibilities: The Executive Director is the public representative of our four-ensemble program for young instrumentalists who love music and want to see where it can take them! You ensure the effective and efficient day-to-day operations, and work in collaboration with the artistic staff to provide a supportive, challenging, and rewarding ensemble experience for our students. You motivate and lead the staff and board as the GPYO strengthens its partnership with the Westminster Conservatory and builds bridges with others who share our vision for providing training and performance opportunities to our members. You provide structure and direction for new programming and organizational initiatives and play an active role in ongoing board development and strategic planning.

Priorities: 

  • Provide executive administration, operational structure, promotional support and financial management for our annual programs and new member recruitment. 
  • Lead strategic planning and organizational development efforts by working with the Board and other constituents to establish short- and long-range goals and define policies and procedures. 
  • Cultivate relationships with current and past members and families, leaders of regional arts organizations, and civic leaders. Collaborate productively with local partners, including Westminster Conservatory.
  • Enhance the organization’s profile and visibility throughout the community. 

Executive Administration and Management – Finance, Operations, and Staffing 

  • Work closely with Operations Manager to ensure the smooth delivery of programs, concerts, and tours.
  • With the Treasurer, bookkeeper, and Finance Committee, provide a road map for appropriate and responsible resourcing for current and future operations.
  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise paid and volunteer staff members in accordance with GPYO policies and all applicable laws.
  • Ensure GPYO’s compliance with applicable state/federal regulations; with the staff and board develops internal policies and procedures to guarantee that the organization conducts its business according to standards of ethics and best practices.

Fundraising, Marketing, and Public Relations 

  • Develop communications strategy to enhance the organization’s image and visibility.
  • With the board, craft a fundraising plan to leverage current growth into stability and programming innovation.
  • With staff and board, cultivate and energize volunteers and donors in ongoing organizational support. 

Strategic Planning and Organizational Development 

  • Serve as the communications channel between the board and staff; craft plans to operationalize strategic vision, mission, and priorities.
  • Engage actively in ongoing board development and strategic planning; serve ex officio on the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Finance Committee. Play an active role in identifying, cultivating, recruiting, and orienting new board members. 
  • Promote a positive organizational environment by building rapport with the staff, students, parents, and alumni and displaying professionalism, courtesy, integrity, respect, and proactive listening.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree, or bachelor’s degree with a compelling combination of experience and expertise in managing people and programs
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills, working effectively with people of all ages and a range of cultural backgrounds
  • Prior experience in music and/or arts production and education
  • Professional or volunteer experience in a non-profit environment, especially working with - or on - a nonprofit board
  • Ability to manage a wide variety of activities and multi-task, plus ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends 
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to achieve goals 
  • Technical proficiency with Google Workspace, accounting and database software, and social media sources
