Summer Internship - PlayPenn 2022 New Play Development Conference

Summer Internship Announcement

PlayPenn’s 2022 New Play Development Conference

For the first time in two years, our Conference returns live and in person at The Drake Theatre. Interns will serve as Production Assistants to support and facilitate programming over three weeks. We are looking for candidates in Philadelphia interested in producing, directing, stage managing, or dramaturgy of new work. The application is open to college-aged students and high school seniors (18+). The Conference will run from July 5th and July 24h, 2022.  Interns will work alongside working professionals. BIPOC & LGBTQIA+ identifying students are highly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

Each intern will be assigned to work on one of six plays selected by the Conference Committee. Some intern duties would include:

  • Assist the stage manager of your respective play with the setup and strike of each rehearsal.
  • Read stage directions of your assigned play during rehearsal and at each performance.
  • Assist in tracking script changes and printing new pages (at the discretion of the stage manager).
  • Serve as an usher at readings of other plays.
  • Attend all rehearsals of your assigned show.
  • Assist with load-in and load-out at The Drake Theatre.

Sitting in on rehearsal will give you the opportunity to observe the collaboration between the director, a living playwright, and the actors.

Compensation

Interns will work no more than 55 hours over the three weeks, for a total stipend of $750. Unfortunately, PlayPenn cannot provide housing. Interns are required to attend all scheduled orientations, rehearsals, performances, and shifts.

Interns will also be offered a resume writing workshop with a theatre professional. You will each be provided with feedback on your individual resume.

Safe Work Environment

The new leadership team at PlayPenn recognizes there is work that historically has been neglected, as such we are reexamining our institution and the ways we can better foster a work environment that is safe, equitable, and inclusive. We will not tolerate sexual harassment, racism, discrimination, offensive language, offensive behavior, and/or violence. To ensure accountability regardless of the parties involved, we have established a detailed report protocol. Should an incident occur, interns should seek an ally with whom they feel safe.  The first point of contact would be your Stage Manager, followed by the Production Manager, then the Director of Operations, and finally an Artistic Director.

In addition, a third-party HR consultant will be on hand during orientation and then on call for the remainder of the conference, if you would prefer to confide in someone outside of PlayPenn.

To apply, please submit your application and resume (via google form) by May 27, 2022, at 11:59 pm EST.

Select candidates will move on to a second round, where they will be interviewed by Santiago Iacinti (Associate Artistic Director/Education Associate), Shawna Bean (Director of Operations), and Kari Krein-Silvers (Conference Production Manager).
