Part-time Managing Director

Headlong seeks an innovative, strategic, and empathetic Managing Director to work in partnership with the Artistic Director/Co-Founder. Headlong is a Philadelphia-based activator of performance research, cultural inquiry, and overlapping layers of communities. Founded in 1993, we create audience-engaging art, support and sponsor artists, and offer a 14-week residency and performance training program at our studios on South Broad Street.

Compensation

  • Part-time, $30,000 per year
  • Four weeks paid time off 
  • Flexible schedule, mostly remote (Staff are currently working remotely but are needed in the office or at events in Philadelphia on occasion.)

The new Managing Director is organized, resourceful, flexible, detail-oriented, and has a background in fundraising and marketing, collaboration, and team-building within diverse communities. They will thrive in an entrepreneurial environment and have a passion for supporting and connecting art/creators in Philadelphia. This job description is not exhaustive but presents a scope of work. You may be expected to perform different tasks as needed by your changing role or the organization's overall objectives. However, we are committed to a work-life balance.

As the Managing Director, you work in partnership with the Artistic Director/Co-Founder (AD) and the Board to address short- and long-term goals of the company:

  • You are the front-line fundraiser responsible for developing strategies to secure annual, planned giving, and donor-directed gifts. 
  • You streamline and improve processes and oversee the company's financial management and operations, such as preparing and maintaining annual operating and program budgets. 
  • You help build and manage all aspects of communications and marketing to clarify and promote the company's updated brand and artistic vision.

Key Responsibilities

Development & Fundraising (40%)

  • In collaboration with the Artistic Director and Finance Director, identify and prioritize funding opportunities for general operating and programs.
  • Partner with the Artistic Director and Board to research, identify and cultivate donors and foundations for annual and longer-term support.
  • Plan, manage, and evaluate fundraising campaigns and activities, such as: 
    • Write and prepare proposals for annual giving campaigns, sponsorships, etc
    • Assist with development and execution of organizational grant efforts, pre-and post-award, including supporting the administration of grant funds, reporting, and evaluation following grant guidelines
    • Oversee gift processing and acknowledgment practices, ensuring a high-touch response to partners and donors
    • Supervise timely preparation and delivery of required financial budgets and reports as required

Leadership & Strategy (30%)

  • Along with the Board and Artistic Director, create and implement the organization's strategic vision and programming, aligning resources with mission and values.
  • Attend board meetings, serve as advisory member and minute-taker, and participate on board committees as necessary.
  • Strengthen existing partnerships and build long-term relationships with new and prospective partners as appropriate
  • Plan, execute and expand the HPI Residency in collaboration with the Program Director and Coordinator.

Communications & Marketing (25%)

  • Create and implement company communications plan/calendar and manage day-to-day marketing and fundraising efforts
  • Oversee social media strategy, write regular posts, and engage staff, fellows, or volunteers in content generation 
  • Define marketing strategy, tactics, and programs with input from the Artistic Director.
  • Determine and measure earned revenue goals in partnership with the Finance Director.

Ad-hoc duties as requested by Artistic Director (5%)

  • In your time, we account for how you may elect or be asked to take on ad-hoc tasks/duties as suits developing programs and changing circumstances.

 

Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in development or fundraising and communications or related fields
  • Experience or deep interest in non-profits and experimental performance 
  • Excellent writer and clear communicator
  • Can work autonomously and collaboratively
  • Strong project management skills 
  • Comfortable with Google Office Suite and with learning/using new software
  • You can take direction and give direction. 
  • You can prioritize among competing needs
