New Music Ensemble Relâche Seeks Part-Time Managing Director

Relâche, an adventurous contemporary ensemble dedicated to performing the music of today, seeks an entrepreneurial freelance Managing Director who will cultivate wider funding sources, increase our visibility, and expand our opportunities to commission and showcase the works of today's exciting composers. This is a new position created to bolster our longstanding mission of commissioning new works by diverse composers and exposing wide audiences to music that reflects the tenor of the times we are living in.  The plan is for this position to grow into a full-time Executive Director position, which will depend on successful fundraising and marketing activities.

Job title:  Managing Director

Location:  Remote position, with possible occasional travel to Philadelphia.

Hours:  Estimated 10 hours a week on average.

Compensation:  $20 an hour, up to $10,000 a year.

Job description:  The Managing Director is responsible for positioning Relâche for a new era by broadening awareness of its exceptional 40-year history of championing musical innovation and diversity, introducing new audiences to its signature blend of unconventional yet approachable music, and significantly expanding its base of financial support. The Managing Director works closely with the co-Artistic Directors and reports directly to the ensemble's Board of Directors.

Qualifications:  The ideal candidate is a successful arts manager and fundraiser who enjoys initiating and maintaining fruitful relationships with people with diverse backgrounds and identities, and is also proficient with technology. Knowledge of the new music world and the ability to forge artistic and administrative partnerships and connections are big plusses.

Qualifications details:

• The desire to reach out to new people and win new audiences and support for a world-class leader in commissioning and performing innovative music.
• Successful fundraising and donor development experience, preferably for a music or other arts organization.
• The skills and motivation to work independently and in collaboration with the artistic leadership.
• Experience writing grants and shepherding submissions through the application process.
• Experience managing a budget and anticipating expenses and income.
• Fluency in using administrative software, especially Google Office, Mailchimp, Zoom.
• Strong social media know-how – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
• Ability to work productively amid the varying schedules and diverse perspectives of Board members, musicians, audience members and donors.
• Proficiency in Wix website development and management is highly desirable.
• Experience using Facebook Live, Zoom, or other tools to hold remote events is a big plus.
• Availability to occasionally assist at evening and weekend events in Philadelphia and elsewhere is desirable.

Duties:

• Create a Growth Plan with measurable benchmarks and work in collaboration with the Board and musicians to carry it out.
• Present regular progress reports on the Growth Plan to the Board.
• Cultivate new donors, including major donors, and develop new strategies to significantly expand our base of sustained support.
• Administer grant process: Write grants, research new sources of funding, stay on top of application deadlines and changing eligibility criteria.
• Administer and add to our email list of audience members, donors and potential donors.
• Work collaboratively with Board members to project an appropriate and consistent voice for our online presence.
• Administer our social media accounts: Maintain calendar for timely promotion of our events on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram; monitor social media for opportunities to remain visible between events.
• Recommend additions or changes to our website that will aid our growth agenda.
• Track our online analytics: Provide quarterly summaries of our social media and website activity and responses (page views, retweets, mentions, likes, referrals, etc.) for the Board.
• Attend and participate as needed in scheduled Board meetings (remotely or in person).
• Coordinate with Artistic Co-Directors to plan events and schedule rehearsals.
• Research and book performance venues in consultation with Co-Artistic Directors and the Board.
• Gain familiarity with the history of Relâche and with that of other performers, composers and presenters in the local, national and international new-music scene.
