Horticulturist and Landscape Manager

Glen Foerd seeks an energetic, self-directed horticulturist to steward its 18-acre waterfront estate and historic gardens. In addition to maintaining the estate’s gardens, the ideal applicant will advocate for Glen Foerd’s historic landscape and facilitate learning experiences for volunteers and the public. The position will also include routine maintenance of the public park.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Horticultural
• Maintain the gardens through timely planting, weeding, mulching, pruning, fertilizing, irrigating, and leaf raking with minimal supervision
• Maintain specialty areas, including the rose garden, the terrace plantings, woodland areas, and tennis court and advocate for projects that need additional funding
• Demonstrate familiarity with a broad range of trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals

Educational
•Cultivate relationships with garden volunteers and provide learning opportunities to increase capacity
•Plan and facilitate occasional programs for the public, focused on Glen Foerd’s grounds and gardens
•Assist staff with ongoing interpretation of the estate

Maintenance
•Support the routine maintenance of the estate, to include cleaning mansion gutters and collecting and removing waste for recycling and disposal on a weekly basis
•Perform regular walkthroughs of the grounds to dispose of fallen tree limbs and branches

Qualifications:

  • Background in public gardens and horticulture is required
  • Skills and experience in educating the public and working with volunteers is highly desired
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds, work outside in all weather, walk, stand, and stoop for long periods.

Employment Type: Part-time, non-exempt. Interested candidates must have the ability and willingness to work 12-18 hours per week throughout the year. Schedule is flexible.

Compensation: $15 - $20 / hour depending on experience
