Security Guard - Part Time

This position is responsible for maintaining security for WHYY facility, employees, and guests. This position is also responsible for conducting multiple facility rounding tours to inspect and ensure that the property and people are safe throughout their shift.  The Security Guard is an “essential personnel” position, requiring the employee to work during inclement weather and off-hour shifts as it is critical to the continuation of key operations and services in the event of a suspension of operational situation.

 

This is a part time position scheduled for Saturday 12am - 8am and Sunday 12am - 8am. Offers of employment are subject to a background and a DMV history check. 

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Protect WHYY’s employees, guests and assets relative to thefts, assaults, unlawful entries, fire and other ancillary safety issues.

Protect people and property.

Assure compliance with safety, fire and facility procedures through personal involvement in observing and reporting potential problems.

Assist visitors, guests and volunteers by answering questions and providing assistance.

Meet and greets people as they enter the facility, recording the names of all visitors and issuing passes to those having business in the building. Inspects employee, visitors, vendors, and interns’ identification as necessary.

Notify staff members that they have guests; making visitors and guests comfortable until the WHYY staff member meets them.

Inspect packages and other items as necessary according to security procedures and document the results of those inspections.

Personally inspects locks, lights, fire & electrical system area and alarms, and security alarms and utilizes the surveillance and camera system to assist. Records and reports all out-of-compliance situations.

Provides security for internal events as requested. Maintains visibility and assists event coordinators and guests as needed. Is aware of and implements emergency procedures and/or evacuation if necessary.

Is the primary point person to properly handle unauthorized, unruly or disruptive people and suspicious packages.

Assists the WHYY Safety & Risk Manager with any and all duties as directed.

Manages parking area according to WHYY policies and situational demands.

May be required to operate company vehicles during the course of their duties.

Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.

Maintains a regular and predictable attendance.

Supports WHYY outside events.

Performs any other duties as assigned by appropriate personnel.

 

Qualifications

 

Education: Must demonstrate the ability to read instructions and non-technical manuals and interpret the information to the security staff at a level equivalent to a 12th grade education. Language and written skills must also be equivalent to a 12th grade education to describe and/or write and record, instruct and inform others who may not be aware of a particular situation. A two year college degree is preferred. Basic computer literacy is required.

 

Experience: One or more years of security experience in a public building. Possess good documentation skills.  Prior law enforcement and/or military experience is a plus.

 

Driver’s License: Must possess a valid driver’s license.

 

Technical Skills: The position requires the employee to possess basic computer skills. Including, but not limited to Outlook, Word and basic internet research.

 

Communication Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively, demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and professionalism while meeting and addressing staff members and the public.  Must remain calm in emergency or tense situations, in order to effectively ensure WHYY personnel and visitor safety, along with the security of the physical structure.
