Literacy Consultant for Clay, Play, Read Programming

Description: The Clay Studio, in partnership with the Kensington and Cecil B. Moore branches of the Free Library of Philadelphia, was awarded a 3-year grant from the William Penn Foundation to create a new informal-learning program for families called “Clay, Play, Read.” Programming will take place at these two library branches in year one, with the addition of a third library for year two and three. Each branch will host 6-workshops annually. Our team is seeking a Literacy Consultant to assist our team on program development and implementation. This position is expected to be about 30-50 hours total in November through March/April in year 1 and year 2 of the grant.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide guidance to the program team from The Clay Studio and library branches on best practices for family literacy programming;
  • Literacy-based curriculum and activity development, including take-home family activities; 
  • Oversight of curriculum and lesson development for workshops;
  • Observation of some workshops; 
  • And other deliverables as agreed upon with the project team.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Philadelphia’s early learning landscape and needs of families with young children;
  • Knowledge of early childhood development, early literacy, and children’s literature;
  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate literature and early literacy activities;
  • Ability to work with a collaborative team and provide feedback on programming;
  • Ability to travel to and from multiple locations (Kensington and Cecil B Moore library branches, etc.)

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required;
  • Early childhood experience is required;
  • Experience working with families and parents/care-givers is required;
  • Experience with ESL/ELL students is beneficial, but not required; 
  • Or, equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience.

Clearances for working with children may also be required (FBI-fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearances, and Pennsylvania Background Check)
