Director of Technical Theater and Theater Director

The Shipley School is seeking a Director of Technical Theater and Theater Manager.  This person will provide oversight and support to the Theater Department on both campuses for events such as music, concerts, lectures and rentals. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 Theatre

  • Teach a minimum of one class of technical theater.
  • Support student involvement in technical theatre
  • Direct oversight of the Theater, Grey Box, and performance/meeting spaces.  This includes the scheduling of time in all spaces as well as the overall physical appearance of the spaces.   
  • Direct oversight for the budget for all school performances.
  • Sit as an active member of the school's calendar committee
  • Technical support of Theatre (sound, lighting, set design and construction):  Concerts, MS Musical, LS grade level plays, US productions in the fall, winter, and spring, talent shows, movie nights, outside performances.
  • Operation of Riely control room and Grey Box control room
  • Element ETC Lighting Board
  • Soundcraft SI Performer 2 digital mixing board
  • ION ETC lighting panel
  • Crestron Touch Panels
  • Inventory/storage of supplies/tools
  • Stage work construction
  • Maintain theatre plans and specifications.
  • Make recommendations to the theater and music leadership regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
  • Attend technical rehearsals in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspect of the mounting of shows.
  • Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, recording and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Operate, maintain, and safeguard the technical assets of the performance venues, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and maintenance of theater facilities.
  • Operate as a collaborative member of the Creative Team on all theatrical productions, including regular participation in Production and Design Meetings and participate in the creation and execution of an annual Production Calendar.
  • Be able to lift, push, or pull objects up to 100 pounds using appropriate tools.

AV

  • Direct oversight of AV in the US Common Room, MS Resources Room, Gordon Center, Lowrey Room, Student Commons, and any other large gathering spaces.
  • Direct oversight of AV for events such as, but not limited to, regularly scheduled divisional student assemblies, special divisional assemblies, all colleague meetings, Back to School, Admissions events, External Relations events, graduation events, etc.
  • Meetings requiring AV:  Board of Trustees committee meetings, faculty meetings.
  • Attend Divisional and All School events
  • Maintain and keep a record of AV equipment:  projectors, laptops/desktop connection to the projector, speakers, microphones, podium, (when a microphone is required), screens, DVD/VCR, audio/video cables, overhead projectors, TV's, carts.
  • Plan and implement upgrades of AV equipment within allocated budget with the Business Manager and Assistant Director of Physical Plant.
  • Act as an emergency backup for all A/V and educational resources within the classroom (including, but not limited to, Smart Boards, White Boards, Document Camera, Etc.).

 Technology

  • Monitor AV, AV Support, Tech support, and Calendar emails in order to assist in resolving issues that arise.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of network projects as they pertain to A/V
  • Assist with maintenance and upkeep of network equipment pertaining to A/V
  • Adjust bell schedule for Middle and Upper School as needed.

Physical Plant

  • Assistant with event setup and breakdowns.    

Calendar

  • Sit as an active member of the Calendar Committee to administer the calendar on a school-wide basis, including approving all events and maintaining the accuracy of information.
  • Approve calendar events for US building including Riely Theatre, Grey Box, MS Resource room, Gordon Center, and other large gathering spaces.   
  • Create reports based on calendar information to provide a better understanding of school facilities usage.

Requirements:

  • Bachelors' degree preferred
  • Minimum of three years of experience in theater and or performing arts management
