Director of Human Resources

Due to a recent retirement, Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library has an exciting opportunity available for a Director of Human Resources. Founded by Henry Francis du Pont, Winterthur is the premier museum of American decorative arts, reflecting both early America and the du Pont family’s life here. Its 60-acre naturalistic garden is among the country’s best, and its research library serves scholars from around the globe.

This position, which reports to the Director & CEO and is a member of the Senior Management Team, has executive responsibility for recommending, implementing and promoting comprehensive Human Resources policies and programs including employee benefits, organizational planning & development, compensation, HRIS, recruiting, employee relations, training and strategic HR planning.  Provide advice and guidance on the interpretation of Human Resources policies as they relate to individual and institutional objectives while ensuring compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations. This position is responsible for a benefits budget of over $2 million, a department budget of nearly $400,000, and the HR department for a staff of nearly 400 employees.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Plans, recommends, implements and promotes Human Resources plans, budgets, policies and programs which, support institutional objectives; formulates, communicates and interprets HR policies; participates in HR decisions involving Winterthur staff.

Provides leadership to the Employment & Training Manager and the Benefits & Employment Administrator in all matters related to compliance, HR policies, laws and regulations in the recruiting, appraisal, counseling, transfer, promotion, or termination of staff.

Conducts Human Resources research, prepares Human Resources statistics and develops, conducts or assists and coordinates training programs.

Designs, recommends and manages major elements of all compensation and benefits plans.

As a member of the Senior Management team, assists in the development & implementation of the Strategic and Long Range planning for Winterthur.

Communicates and reports to the Human Resources, Finance & Executive Committees of the Board regarding Compensation, Benefits and HR strategy.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:  Minimum Education:  Minimum: BA/BS degree

Preferred Education: Preferred: College degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field with an advanced degree in HR, business.

Minimum:  Highly developed and demonstrated interpersonal and relationship skills.  Highly developed and demonstrated written, oral communications and time management skills.  Outstanding organizational and analytical ability; ability to manage competing priorities. Highly developed and demonstrated ability to lead and manage people.  Good knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Knowledge of laws affecting & relating to Human resources management e.g. ERISA, FLSA, ADA, COBRA, EEO, etc. Knowledge of accounting and an ability to read financial statements and produce budgets.

Minimum: 10 years of demonstrated progressive responsibility in Human Resources with “hands on” experience in recruiting, compensation, benefits, payroll, employee relations, and compliance.  Minimum of 3 years leading a Human Resources department.

Preferred: 15 years of HR experience with 5 years experience leading a HR department with 2 years of that experience in a non-profit or museum environment.
