Advocacy

The arts and culture are thriving in the Greater Philadelphia area, but elected officials must be held accountable to make decisions that reflect and support this growing constituency.  Advocacy presents a critical opportunity to promote the impact of the cultural sector, while introducing your work to your area legislators.  The Cultural Alliance can help you define what advocacy means to your organization, set goals and objectives, how to determine the tactics to reach them, identify legislative targets, and help you communicate your message.

Through advocacy days in Capitol Hill, Harrisburg, and local district offices, member representatives from your organization can make the case for the impact of the arts to elected officials.  These meetings serve as an opportunity to introduce your work to local legislators, discuss issues impacting the entire cultural sector, and how a change in policy might affect your organization.  The more that City Council members, County Commissioners, State Senators and Representatives, and Federal Representatives and Senators hear from the arts and culture community, the more likely they will move swiftly on policy affecting the future of the sector.

As issues affecting the nonprofit arts and cultural sector arise in city, state, and federal government, the Cultural Alliance informs members of the need for action and what steps to take through our Online Action Center and Advocacy Alerts.  Alerts contain background information on the issue at hand, the current status of the issue or legislation, and steps to take for action.  Due to their timely nature, alerts are issued by e-mail.

The Cultural Alliance's cultural policy work is supported by the The William Penn Foundation. Additional support is provided by the John S. and James L. Kinght Foundation Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation, Lincoln Financial Foundation, and Dolfinger-McMahon Foundation.
